Getting ready for some summer mountain biking and seriously thinking of playing some table top games with a mate at our local game shop, errrm, for the first time.

Where do you do your mountain biking? I used to have a cyclocross bike and the track where they did the mountain biking for the commonwealth games a few years back is about 5 mins away from my home. I never got around to cycling and the track but have walked it plenty of times

New England area. Very lucky as there's lots of tracks that are regularly maintained, from bush trails to pine forests, that are all within 20 minutes or so by car. We walk them also ;) ...going for a ride this arvo actually.

Nice! Summer coming up is always exciting for these kind of things. I sold my bike a couple of years of years ago, these days I'm more into my motorcycle. I'm always tempted to buy another though there's always something taking my money from me haha

I've started the process to seek an adult diagnosis, I'm not sure where this is going to take me.

Yeah, I got a formal diagnosis which was reassuring because I like to categorise things but it really isn't of much more value than that to me. I just paid a lot of money for something I already knew although at the time it felt quite important.

Is there any benefit of getting an adult diagnosis in Australia?

I was diagnosed earlier this year at the age of 28. I must say I found it to be quite an underwhelming experience. There are psychologists that bulk bill if you're seeking a diagnosis. Personally I find it hard to trust someone who charges more on top of what they get from Medicare, it seems like they only care about your money and not so much your concerns.

If you can find someone that bulk bills I say definitely go for it, but it's good to know that it probably won't be some life changing experience. You'll still be the same person you've always been. It's just a matter of being happy with who you are, ASD or not

For many years I didn't think it was worth getting an official diagnoses. However, as I get older and find that I'm still alone with no close friends and very little in the way of a support network, a potential diagnosis may be of benefit if I need to fall back on it for whatever reason.

I don't expect it to change anything it's more of a safety net for my future as well as validating what I've suspected to be the case for around 10 years now. It does help that my mother thinks I probably do meet the criteria for a diagnosis based on my childhood.

If it's not private, which clinic?
I wasn't aware of *any* bulk billing psychs in Melbourne that dealt with Aspergers in adults.
You can PM me the answer if you'd prefer.

Cheers.

Because I have no family, my wife has concerns about my welfare in the event that something happens to her, so we've discussed an official diagnosis...

...HOWEVER, I've been seeing my psychologist going on five years and I think there's an honesty in that. Even though she ethically won't provide an official diagnosis, I believe my unofficial one to be every bit as legitimate.

Hi

I'm a newbie from Melbourne - well country Vic actually. Spice wolf in terms of 'free' diagnosis in Aus. You can get a GP to write you a mental health plan which gives you access to psych services under medicare. This is the cheapest way I know of.

I am self diagnosis. Still processing really, not sure I need an official diagnosis and don't want to disclose to employers at the moment, but that might change if I decide to come out. I am an adult female so good at 'pretending to be normal' but ends up costing me later.

I am looking for Aspie friends, I am adult female into fantasy, apocalypse stuff reading and writing. Read a lot of news, like practical tasks building stuff, inventing stuff. Moving to the country has been great for me - less overload.

Also left full on job where I would work all week and then collapse and hide all weekend. Now working part time and feel I have more balance and can follow my passions as well, not just work and sleep.

Cheers
Sas

I will move this to the General forum where more Antipodean members are likely to see it.
