When people ask "what do I want" what type of want are they referring to?

The type where you [["emotionally"]or["logically"]] want something?

"emotionally"=as a response to part of the brain that decided it.//normally for pleasure
ex) like a video game
ex)doing something to impress someone.
"logically"=because it makes sense to get it.
ex) to study for a test

Providing context to the exact situation might help.

I'd guess they are asking what can they get you that you would like to have weather it be emotionally or logically.

It's not some deep metaphysical question about what you truly want. They're asking you, "What is something that's within my power to buy for you that would make you pleased as a gift?"

What do you want for Christmas?

Meaning. I would like to purchase you a gift to celebrate the holiday season. Instead of me buying you something you will absolutely hate, please give me a few ideas of things you would like to have. This way I don't waste my time and money purchasing you a present with you looking at it thinking What.The.f**k?

"Want" means something you would like to have/own.
