Is it possible to get an autism diagnosis for less or free?

I'm not satisfied with going for the self-diagnosis route, but when I asked my psychiatrist how much an a diagnosis would cost from a developmental specialist he threw out something like 400 dollars at best. That's way beyond my means. I could scrape together 100 dollars maybe 150 dollars if I saved up, but nowhere near that much.
The reason it's important to me to get a diagnosis is because if I was medically diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum, it may help my chances for finding employment and in addition I wouldn't have to keep telling people, "Well, I'd say there's at least a 90% chance I'm autistic based on the diagnostic methods I've used on myself and the 100-200 man hours of research I've put into understanding the disorder and its many symptoms."

Anything that causes you to become Government Property, even if only temporarily, and insisting that The Messiah has already returned to this earth since decades ago (because he has and has written the corrections to past erroneous religious texts that are clarified at the http://www.the-testament-of-truth.co.uk/ web-site), will generally get you sent to the Psych-Ward for an Evaluation, because they will think it's a sign of Mental-Illness.
Another thing you can do is to Question Authority, Question the Government, and if you're trying to enter into the military, you can even also get sent to the Psych-Ward as early as boot-camp for Questioning Authority, telling your seniors how to do their job, pointing out all of the contradictions and flaws and loop-holes in their logical-reasoning, etc.
The former generally results in a Judge/Magistrate ordering a Competency Evaluation... paid for by the taxes of whatever state you happen to be in at the time of these unlawful orders. The latter is also paid for by the taxes that go into funding the military branches as part of your paid training to be recruited and trained by the military personnel, who will send you to a psych-ward for being a conscientious objector. Just be careful about either route for a diagnosis, even though you can do both of these methods to get examined for free, you need to beware of the existence of government-corruption and indoctrination, lest some of these psych-wards try to «force» you to take highly dangerous psychiatric-drugs, even to the point of inspecting your mouth with a flashlight in order to ensure that you've swallowed the toxic cum.
I know this from experience, both methods, but fortunately I have a high enough intellectual-level to be able to call the government-workers out on a lot of their BS so as to not been required to be forced to take any medications (the brief period of time in my life-history where I did consume Zyprexa then Invega due to freaking POLICE STATE USA being the REAL problem, NOT anything going on with any so-called chemicals, was because of that psychiatrist being nothing more than another ignorant drug-pusher who refused to even GLANCE at the «scientific-evidence» references I mentioned to her which proved that the psychiatric-industry is completely incorrect in its beliefs/assessments, and it was ONLY to give them honest answers about taking the meds and whether they helped me or not; they did not help with anything at all and only caused permanent neurological-damage which created a disability that now prevents me from ever again being able to constantly be working full-time/over-time like I was doing originally).
Psychiatric-medications are so bad that I now blatantly just tell people outright, that if they're dumb enough to actually think that psychotropic-drugs are in any way legitimate or safe for consumption, then THEY need to be taking the meds for a few months in a row, followed by quitting cold turkey, then PROVING that they will not either suicide or engage in some kind of dangerous withdrawal-symptom that brings harm either to themselves or others. See, I know that ALL psychotropics are neuro-toxins, that are classified by the FDA as Schedule II Controlled Substances, meaning that they are JUST AS DANGEROUS as Cocaine/Heroine, and I find it a great IRONY that they jail people for being in possession of LESS «dangerous» substances, yet they PUSH the «drugging» agenda onto an unsuspecting population.
Remember, opportunity is always everywhere, and it's possible to be able to get just about anything done for free, provided that you're patient enough to keep your eyes open, just keep searching around and inquiring. You should probably avoid the methods that I mentioned, although it can most-certainly get you diagnosed for free, but the former generally puts you into jail/prison for one reason or another, and the latter might get you drugged.
You should probably opt for kraftiekortie's method but be prepared to «stalk» the potential autism-related research-studies. You might have to potentially do so for a few months or longer before an opportunity opens itself.

Do you have health insurance? If you are so poor that saving up $100 is a big deal, you may qualify for Obamacare. Find someone who does evaluations and ask your general practitioner for a referral. That's what I did.
Who or what is candain?
But actually $400 sounds pretty reasonable.
$400 is a steal. But, it might end up going to a diagnostician who doesn't understand the whole spectrum, if you catch my drift.

I knew somebody who got an evaluation for free for being such a subject.
In the US, if you're beyond high school, that's the only way one could get a free evaluation.
That sounds like the best option thus far. Thanks. Do you happen to have any idea where I could start looking online to find a place in my state or city where such research might be being conducted?

That sounds quite beyond me in terms of my ability to deal with strangers (i.e. 99.9999999999999999999999999999% of the population, give or take some 9's). I couldn't act or lie to someone to save my life, let alone in such intense situations. I appreciate that you put so much time and energy into your post, however, and I find it intriguing.
Also, as it happens I was diagnosed with Bipolar Type 1 disorder about 5 years ago, but the psychiatrists actually weren't entirely sure if I was having a manic episode or some kind of episode resulting from autism. In the end they sided with Bipolar Type 1 disorder. I was placed on psychotropic drugs for about 3 years and I finally stopped taking them when I took a big risk and managed my mania with my own methods, which I later found out (over a year later) already has a name: Cognitive behavioral therapy. I've handled my manic symptoms completely by myself for about 3 years since then. The reason I stopped taking the medications was essentially for the reasons you outlined. The worst by far was a drug that made me barely able to move and I would often lie on the floor drooling onto the carpet for long stretches of time. I'm glad those years are long behind me now.

I have health insurance, yes. Yes, that sounds like a good idea. I'll ask my doctor about it. He's quite open minded and I'm on good terms with him.

Just asking rhetorically. There is no need to give me sensitive details.
Well, I might need a diagnosis with a medical-grade standard of proof to increase my chances of finding suitable employment. I've failed every single job interview I've ever undergone because I can't tell people what they want to hear: I can only tell them the truth as I know it. And I would need a job to afford the 400+ dollar cost of a diagnosis from a specialist, so it's something of a catch 22.
I knew somebody who got an evaluation for free for being such a subject.

How?

I have heard of quota cases, before. They know what they were and how they got hired.
Excuse my bluntness, but has someone directly offered you a job, in which autism, or some treatment program, was a qualifier?
Have you been offered what is called 'reasonable accommodation', by a prospective employer?
In general, you will not need the diagnosis, in order to find new work, which suits your personality. You don't have to be formally disabled, in order to apply for the slower-paced jobs.
I respect that you would want to know more about yourself and take control of your conditions, if any. But, none of that has to be a hurdle, to your progress, as you would like to see it.
Step 2: wait
Step 3: recieve free diagnoses
Really? I am a Canadian yet I paid $2400 for my developmental + psychological assessment.
