It's pretty common, yes.

What's the difference between problem solving and finding patterns (in behaviour or situation etc.?)

Whilst some of those with Asperger's are known to be very detail-orientated and technical-minded, I believe that many individuals on the spectrum struggle to follow seemingly easy verbal instructions. I cannot say with any degree of certainty why this happens to be but I surmise it's related to processing difficulties and perhaps, for some, a lack of interest in what they are hearing.

I know that I hear too much, and this greatly affects what I can remember. It's as if I am tuned into too many radio stations at one time and cannot filter what is of significance. My levels of distractibility are extremely high, but I guess that could be ascribed to undiagnosed ADHD.
