I recently made my first ever online friend, as I don't talk to anyone when I'm not at school so getting to know people online helps my loneliness tremendously. I also find that I can form sentences a lot more fluently and clearly online than in real life, and they're less random/weird/socially unacceptable (I suppose it's because I have more time to think).

However, I don't want to appear too clingy by messaging her as often as I would like to, but I also don't want the friendship to fade over time, so I'm not sure how often I should stay in contact with her.

Is once every 2 days about right?

The usual thing is to take it in turns. Sending lots of messages one way (and they are not replying, or given chance to reply) isn't the best situation to have.
