There used to be this guy named "Squid" here--about 1-2 years ago.

He was a trip!

Great! I would have loved to meet him.

He was about 24 years old, and he took care of his mother. And he had some kind of job--I forgot what it was, though. He lived in Louisiana.

He believed in people having confidence in themselves, despite having an alleged "disorder."

I wonder how much an impact the internet has had on special interests

He seems like a nice person. I like it when people don't beat themselves up over being "different".

Because of easy access to myriad types and forms of information: quite a bit.

Do you think some people's special interest would of petered out without the internet

I don't think I would be interested in the same things if I didn't have the Internet. When I was younger, I didn't have access to the Internet, so my knowledge on topics was more limited.

Perhaps sometimes.

However, if one lived near a library, and one had the time, one could indulge in one's "special interest" to his/her heart's content.

Then, of course, you have "mechanical" special interests like engines (and engineering)--which can be indulged in though learning while working with one's hands.

I've got many obsessions that I consider special to me, but the ones in the top category would be Batman, DBZ, various types of music and boats. I have been into those for years and cannot stop loving them 8)

My special interests include Internet forums, autism, Choose Your Own Adventure books, and making up imaginary worlds and characters (often related to the above interests). I also have intense obsessions with people, but I place those in a different category than my special interests.

Awesome! I've been enthralled by autism for a little over a year now; I just can't stop talking about it :D . It's interesting- I also have obsessions with people and I don't consider them to be in the same category as my special interests. In fact, I can't remember a time when I wasn't completely obsessed with a person.

Are these people famous, or are they closer to you than famous people?
