Someone I know on a chat I moderate went nonverbal and started using emojis instead of typing and when we told them to stop spamming the chat with emojis (to us it just looked like they were spamming) , they got mad. Im autistic too, and when I go nonverbal (basically all the time), I can still write perfectly fine.

No. But going nonverbal (in a sense of being too relaxed instead of being too tensed) would have my words become... Less concrete.
So emoji and emphasis kinda makes sense. 8O

For me, it depends. Most of the time, I just can't get my vocal cords to respond no matter how hard I try, but sometimes I can't even put two words together to form some semblance of a sentence. I'm not sure if I'd even be able to use emojis halfway decently in the latter situations, though, and I probably wouldn't be able to interpret what other people wrote very well. It's like my brain just overloads and can't handle words anymore.

How would it take away the ability to write?

Many nonverbal people write quite well, actually.

When I go nonverbal, it seems like a glitch between my brain and my vocal chords. The words are generally there, but I can't get them out. In those times, I can still type and sign, and write by hand, albeit more messily than usual (which is saying something). It's a really strange sensation, like a part of my brain just shuts off.

That said, I have trouble with emojis at the best of times. I don't seem to interpret them the same way other people do, so they're unreliable as communication for me. But it could be different for others.

Often complete nonverbal-ness goes with shutdown.
If just general functioning, I write perfectly well, much better than I ever speak.
But if I'm in a shutdown mode speaking, writing, signing, or understanding anything at all just goes out the proverbial window. My brain is fried and I can't put the pieces of anything together.

I can think of a few people with classic non-verbal autism who write plenty, including me. And I rarely use emojis.

How am I supposed to use emojis anyways when I have trouble reading facial expressions? :P

^ I'm absolutely useless (well below autistic average, apparently) at reading facial expressions too, but I can read the odd emoji, especially the simple ones like smilies. Maybe because it's cartoony and exaggerated? I don't know.
Heh, I do know someone who is constantly using the wrong emojis in sms texts because she refuses to wear her glasses and can't see the little faces, so I get all these mismatched emojis to the text words - that confuses the hell out of me.

When I go completely nonverbal which occurs mostly during shutdowns/meltdowns I mostly can't write because not only I lose the ability to speak I also lose the ability to think straight if it makes sense.

There are also times that are more like, i guess, selective mutism. In that case I can communicate through writing.

When I was completely nonverbal, I wrote much more fluently than I do today.
After speech was forced on me, my writing suffered.
It's like I can only communicate so much.
If one area is used more, the other dries up.

I just make my cursor hover above them so I can read the description of what they are supposed to be  . Some of them to me don't look anything like the emotion they are trying to show- especially the mad one!

Awesome hack, Stampy! I can't believe I never thought of that. If only it would work in texts, too. Thanks!

I misread the title. I would say when someone goes nonverbal, as in shutting down, that might also affect their ability to write.

Yeah, I am TERRIBLE at writing. If ever I have to write an essay at school, I'll always fail miserably.

This is a useful thread. While I am sorry to read of the communication difficulties people have, the insight and variety of causes are good to know.

No problem! I am so confused by some of the emojis here! I usually end up trying to make the facial expression myself, and then seeing what I feel inside if I am on a touch screen and I don't have a mouse and keyboard  .
