Alex,

I believe it would be 40 unique hits as the initial "inactivity" message talked about not receiving 40 visitors in the last 7 days since the bot check my site.

In either case, I'm sure there are enough members that could at least look at the home page that I will be able to make the limit. If you have any suggestions, let me know.

---------

SpaceCase,

Thank you for your comments, and I'm glad you enjoyed reading "Angels" - that story allowed me to indulge a bit in my special interest of emergency vehicles and personnel - touring the fire station down the street from my house and talking w/ the firefighters as "research" for my story.

Sincerely yours,

mentalman

Nice to see someone who is promoting Linux.

I am thinking that it must be possible to write a cgi-bin script, or a php script that will make a http request to your site a couple of times each week. If just a few people do this each week, it should help you to maintain the site.

I can't promise anything immediately, but I shall look into it if it will help.

[edit]

Sorry, I should have mentioned that it might be necessary to set up a periodic triggering of the script, so that it happens automatically.

Hey Serissa,

I'm sorry you can't access the stories on my website. Could you PM or e-mail me any error messages and/or the steps you took in trying to access the stories. Also, information about your operationing system (i.e. Windows, Mac, Linux) and browser (i.e. Internet Explorer 6.0) would be great.

If you can do that, I'll try and fix the problem.

Sincerely yours,

mentalman

Hey Adversarial,

I'm glad you like Linux as much as I do - it's my favorite operating system, and I am very much in love with the philosophy of Open-Source software and Free Software.

Re: your idea below, it sounds very interesting, and (if it works) very helpful. Please don't feel you are obligated to do such a thing however, unless you enjoy developing such script. <grin> I am interested in PHP and other programming a little, so perhaps, if you decided to make it, you could send me the source code for me to look at.

Sincerely yours,

mentalman

This seems like a really really questionable idea. First of all, there are webhosting providers that do not require the site to receive a certain amount of hits. Second, why would you be running cgi scripts on client computers?

My broadband connection is 'always on' and there is a Linux server on the router that connects me to the cable modem. It is doubtful that somebody would have cgi facilities running on a client computer. There would be no reason to do that for an exercise such as this. Setting a script to run once a week to 'hit' a site would not be difficult though the usefulness of this is restricted if unique visitors to the site are required and I missed mention of that stipulation in earlier posts. Also the thought of this occurred to me before I noticed the fact of having to have unique visitors to the site.
