...and I think it's good enough for me. I don't really have a desire to go through the $ and time for an assessment from a center. My therapist says that he feels comfortable saying that I do in fact have high functioning autism or Aspergers.

Anyone else just stop there and have that be enough for them? Is there any reason to go through a full assessment if I am self sufficient?

The main reason would be a sort of insurance in case things go bad and you need help later. It would be harder then as you might not be doing well financially.

The advantage of the "unofficial diagnosis" besides financial is no documentation that could end up in the wrong hands.

I would advise letting yourself process the unofficial diagnosis before making a decision. The next few months MIGHT be an emotional rollercoaster, a period of finding new explanations for key life turning points, finding out you are not as "mild" as you think.
