I tend to believe that there is something there that cannot be explained and unless you have experienced it then you can't really discount it. Blah, blah scientifically this or that.

In my experience there have been times when this has happened to me and its not predictable, its rather random. When each of my parents or grandparents passed away I knew it. I woke up during the night and looked at the clock and knew exactly what had happened. Its eerie and most people tend to discount it as coincidence or me making up stories. I have seen events before they happened in my minds eye, but its not something that I can explain away. Usually, I just note to myself that it was odd to have seen this, but then I move on and don't worry about it. I cannot control when that happens either, it just does. I don't think it could be scientifically proven in any way whatsoever. I wish that it could be explained.

And for all the prophetic dreams you had, I'm sure you've had many more that weren't.

I've had plenty of premonitions in my life, and I can say with certainty that 100% of them came true. I can't speak for everyone, but I know that when I personally have a premonition, it feels distinctly different from a regular old dream. There's a big difference between the two.

Sometimes the premonitions are more symbolic and don't make sense until the events actually unfold, and sometimes they are as literal as you can get. Unfortunately, when the premonitions predict something that will happen personally to me, it's usually something (seemingly?) benign that has no bearing on my life. I've had much more serious ones that would later show up on the news, and of course there's nothing I could have done to have possibly prevented it from happening.

That's how it works in the movies, but in Real Life, it's not half as impressive. In my life, it's always been some uncontrollable, randomly occurring happenstance that pops up when you least expect it...at the very most extreme, it's been creepy enough to get someone else to say "What...the heck?"...but to accurately predict anything you want at will, I think if that were possible we would know about it.

obviously most of you are gonna immediately pooh-pooh this, but I have had several psychic episodes in my life that could not be explained in terms of subtle [quasi-unconscious] signals. In my youth, I have answered people's questions out of the blue that they did not verbally ask me, and when they asked me how I knew they were gonna ask me these questions, I could not answer them. other family members report similar happenings. my older brother dowses fairly regularly. my sister had a childhood chum whom she repeatedly would answer her questions before her chum asked them, and they mutually would pick up the phone before it rang, when the other would call. and I could hide nothing from my parents who both were psychic.

I'm with him ^^ and the others who agree, on this one. I'm a scientist - PhD and everything, and it's not a front for Project Veritas or any such nonsense. But: among my Scots relatives, there are varying degrees of "the sight", and I had a maddeningly obscure version of it myself. Still do, to a much lesser extent. I know when some people are dying - without any contact with them, or news that they are ill. I know when some of my pets are ill or in danger. During my late 20s, I would sit in the car and "feel ahead" to see if there were going to be accidents or hazards on the route during long drives, and I was always right about if, when and where (I timed my rest breaks to avoid them - this was on the Mass and NJ-NY Turnpikes. I'd usually feel that it was OK to resume the trip in just enough time to pass emergency responders at the scene shortly after).

My ex (from long ago now  who was another scientist, almost certainly Aspie    and very much a no-BS guy   ) started relying on my trip radar after two occasions where I suddenly shouted out "pull over, pull over" or "slow down NOW please STOP THE CAR NOW NOW" and an oncoming car or truck came barrelling around a curve in our lane, right through the space where we should have been. After that, I told him the back story. Following which, he'd always ask me if a trip "checked out OK" before starting the car, and when we were riding with his parents, he told them more than once that if I burst out with a warning, to immediately do what I asked. I saved a few deer and raccoons that way, too    .

These days it's faded, and it never was much good for warning me about others in time to reach them or do anything to help. But shortly after I started posting here I suddenly got a serious mortality scare (a premonition of my own doom) out of the blue. I found out, maybe a day later, that I was at serious risk of osteomyelitis and possible sepsis (bone infection, blood poisoning) in an area where that nearly always ends badly (rapid spread, fatal outcome). I wigged out a little bit (due to this plus a really bad post-surgical experience years earlier) and shut down pretty extensively here (without a full explanation, it's enough to be Aspie, I didn't need to convince y'all that I was delusional with it). The day before my surgery the sense of doom completely lifted. I found out after surgery that the threat had apparently resolved. (Good, because I'd taken enough goldenseal to sink a Boston Whaler).

So yeah, I'm with the Blabster, Ferrari, and Sabbra on this one. Believe me, or don't; but I know.

(Edit in: read your answer, and put up an English-to-Scots translation link in its own thread, so as not to divert this one. Have fun.)

mebbe in a previous life I spoke in a burr, but I don't think I have any scot in me this go-round. I can't really do accents in any case. I really like the way they speak and wished I could imitate them.

Yup, no reasoning with delusional people with an overactive imagination. Logic doesn't apply to people that don't base their beliefs in reality. How can you so easily dismiss the fact that subconscious cues lead to your "premonitions" when you weren't even aware that you were receiving these cues? You're simply too ignorant to apply logic to your situation, so you continue to be superstitious and believe you have special powers.

Although I wouldn't put it that bluntly, you are right.

People who claim to be psychic take advantage of people's ignorance by using broad generalizations, such as predicting someone might die or guessing that something bad will happen when you are out driving. They can't provide specific details of what will happen because there is no way to predict such a thing without prior knowledge. Besides, if you could truly predict what will happen, there is no way to stop it, because if you could stop it your prediction would be false. If your prediction was false, then you didn't really know what would happen to begin with.

One example of an unexplainable coincidence from my experience.
When I was young, about 4-5, my mom and I were going to go to Michigan to meet my grandparents on my dad's side for the first time. Until we got to their house, I had never seen a picture of them, had never seen a picture of their house, had never heard their voices. But a few days before we left, I saw them and their house in a dream. Unbelievably detailed. Down to the lawn gnomes. All of them. I knew where to find every single lawn gnome on that property, including the ones that were hidden really well.
So how do I explain that?

^^ @elbowgrease: I think it was Arthur C. Clarke who said that any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

"They've" finally found solid evidence for gravity waves, and long before that, "they" identified bacteria who oriented and navigated along gravitational fields. Then there are homing birds and other critters who use the earth's magnetic field as a guidance system. Who knows what sort of trans-temporal sensory perception is actually in play here? I was in grad school in the 1970s with a guy working on gravity wave detection - god bless him and all the others in his field. Just because it took 40+ years for the technology to get there, doesn't mean there was no "there" to get.

(edit in: most of the really good physicists and mathematicians I have known are serious mystics. Close contact with reality will do that :-) ).

There's nothing supernatural about looking back on childhood memories and mixing up the events of what occurred. Can you say with absolute certainty that you weren't taken there before the age of 4-5? Just because you weren't conscious of it at the time does not mean that it didn't happen. Thinking or hearing about going there later on likely stirred up your subconscious, thus the dream you had.
