I read an article recently about a school in America where a child turned up with a turkey sandwich and banana (or something like that) and had them taken away by the school staff and given "proper food", by which was meant chicken nuggets. In my country, the moron would have lost his job.

That sounds exaggerated. I'm pretty sure American students are allowed to bring their own lunches to school. I brought very similar meals with me to school and I never had my lunch taken away. But Americans do eat a lot of junk food and it is slowly killing us. That's why so many people in this country are dying of heart disease and diabetes. In fact I recently had gallbladder surgery not too long ago which was caused from my unhealthy eating habits so I've been making an effort to eat more healthy and lose weight and I have went from 250 pounds to 210 pounds. :)

that is a strong job to lose 40# :wtg: you are setting a good example and represent hope for many others who need to make the change due to health.

Thank you. :)

It helps that I have a high metabolism.

you're welcome :flower: when I was younger I had a high metabolism also, as long as I did a modicum of exercise, I was pretty thin [6'3'/165# at my peak youthfulness ] but starting at age 30 or so, somebody flipped a switch into the low metabolism position, and no longer could I get away with eating a French-fried Shetland pony with a whole chocolate pie for dessert. now if I so much as look at a picture of such or even think of it, the pounds will pack themselves on like magnets to steel.

Lol well I'm already paying for my mistakes because my eating habits and laziness costed me a gallbladder and I also have a fatty liver now lol. :P

But I am making progress with my dieting even though I still cheat now and then.

religiously avoid refined carbs and you should do alright, but it is also important to have a once-weekly "cheat day" where you can relax a bit, that will help you stay on the healthy eating wagon for the long term. within reason, that is. no friend-fried Shetland ponies. ;) dr. Fuhrman recommends the following acronym memory aid to remember what to stress in your diet lifestyle-
Greens
Beans
Onions
Mushrooms
Berries
Seeds and nuts

if you make one meal of the day a large salad [NO "dressing" unless you make it yourself with no oils], that will definitely help as it will give you much-needed fiber. drink calorie-free or vegetable liquid sparingly during the meal just enough to help you get the food down. drink non-carb stuff later, at least an hour before or after meals, and keep hunger pangs at bay in the hours between meals with low-sodium veggie juice.

Lol see the problem is because I have Aspergers and that annoying sensitivity to texture thing I can't eat a lot of greens or onions because they make me gag. :( I can eat most beans though except for green beans.

I've found a way to diet that seems to help me though. I have completely cut out fried foods and beef and pork and now I only really eat lean meats like fish and chicken breasts. I eat a lot of rice with my meals and if I ever do mac n cheese I use low fat milk and I Can't Believe It's Not Butter. I also use whole grain bread for sandwiches and I eat Turkey burgers instead of regular burgers or peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. I'm also doing oatmeal for breakfast and if I need a snack I do rice cakes or fresh fruits instead of junk food or leftover meals. I also drink water every day now not just for dieting but because I learned caffeine is really bad for you if you have bipolar disorder.

It really has helped a lot. :)

you may be interested in knowing that whole wheat has a lot of sugar hidden in it, it is still a refined carb. it has just as much refined carbs in it as white bread, from what I've read. what do you think of brown rice? I switched to brown rice [from white] and whole oats from meal, as that is further from being refined. also I added quinoa as it is a good alternate carb. sugar is the enemy. I gave up on bread and pasta, as the fake bread/pasta was even more carby than the real thing. so no more sandwiches for me unless I can find some bean bread or lentil bread or ground cauliflower and egg bread. if I hafta have noodles they are Shirataki which are made of yams and have almost no calories in them.

I've heard of this perceived connection between autism and chicken nuggets before.
I, personally, try to avoid junk food but, I can't deny it, I do like a nugget. That's why I got into Quorn nuggets, which I absolutely love.
I never really thought of it as being connected with my ASD, though.

I would suggest "insect nuggets". Take grass hoppers and weevils and grind them up into paste and then coat the lumps of paste with bread crumbs and deep fry them (pretty sure that how they make chicken nuggets), and you would have a great yummy source of protein. And the taste would be indistinguishable from chicken nuggets.

Tofu nuggets would also be doable, and yummy.

Wow I did not realize that. 8O I guess that means whole grain bread is bad too?

And I've tried brown rice before but to be honest I thought it tasted nasty so I went back to white or yellow rice.

I think I'm definitely going to talk to my dietitian about the whole wheat and whole grain bread thing and see what she has to say about it? I definitely don't want to end up with something like diabetes. :(

Consuming sugars does not cause diabetes except insofar as they contribute to weight gain.

Well my problem is I am still technically overweight. I'm trying to get down to at least 180 pounds where I need to be according to my doctor but I keep staying in between 210 and 215 lol.
