After high school, in 2015 I started university and did that until mid 2016, but I realised the course I was doing wasn't for me. Then I was unemployed and living off SSI for almost 2 years, but in May of this year I got employed full-time assembling wheelbarrows, and that's what I've been doing ever since.

In my experience it's difficult to get a job when you have neither qualifications nor connections. I got my job through an employment service. Are you currently with one of those?

When one is in the trough of a wave, it is difficult to see anything but the storm around you. You currently in a trough, Fos. It is not permanent. You are also only 19. Most adolescents think they have the world all figured out and it takes another 10 years or so to discover they were wrong. You are too young to be making the assertions are you are making. You may feel these things and your feelings are real, but you don't have a grip on actual reality.

Sometimes a person needs a boost to see over the obstacles, whatever they are. If you truly have a diagnosed mental illness, you need to be treated. Perhaps even inpatient treatment for a time. To Fnord's questions, I would add: Are you getting treatment?

It is patently not true that most people with developmental disabilities are miserable and hate life. I have worked in the field for about 20 years now and I can tell you that most are happy and engaged in their lives.

I am unemployed and have only really done voluntary work.

According to the National Autistic Society in the UK it is average that in the UK there are only 16% of people who are Autistic that is in employment which if true I think it is disgraceful considering that there is around 700,000 people living on the Spectrum in the UK.

I watched a local documentary about 2 months ago and they tackled the issue of Autism and employment and someone said that what caused people not to get the job is the fact they are Autistic. To me that speaks of discrimination. People as we know who are Autistic are different from each other. There might be some people who are Autistic who might not handle the job but there are also people who are Autistic who can cope very well and can do the job very well.

It is the case of living on welfare and getting help and having good money management skills. But also I still live at home. I would rather have a job and my own place but sadly this is life.

As for homelessness most of the time that is by choice people do get help and there are sheltered accommodations around.

Sadly some do.

In my opinion it is a situation that does need to be addressed. I am sure that in the future things will be much better.

I've had both full time and part-time jobs in the past, but am currently unemployed as I'm in a mental health hospital for chronic depression.

I had 3 jobs. My 1st was a dish-washer, my 2nd was doing floor cleaning, & my 3rd was doing custodial stuff. I was part time & full time at different times. I only worked about 38 months total thou. I have physical disabilities besides my Aspergers & other related mental 1s that make finding the rite job very difficult. I'm on Social Security Disability & was on SSI before I started working. I would start looking for a part time job now were I can still keep my benefits cuz we have a lot of debt but we're trying to move(on waiting list for places) so the job search will have to wait.
