I suspect your batteries have more service life left in 'em than mine. :|

when young I needed about 12 hours of sleep, I was generally sleep-deprived, grossly. as I've grown to old age, however, I sleep a lot less, but benefit from caffeine pills and vigorous exercise during the day to keep me awake. the quality of my sleep has deteriorated somewhat. I feel like a battery that is closing in on the end of its useful service life.

My girlfriend (as mentioned, also on the spectrum) lives off of a weird work pattern and caffeine pills to function. She works the evening shift, so it's perfect for her circadian rhythm.

But I get what you're saying with regards to your battery life.

Me yes.

I would never be able to do it with 7 hours day after day. I'd always be tired. I have a lot of REM sleep.

This might be time to try getting nine hours of sleep...but then again, my busy life doesn't quite permit it.

This is interesting, because I've always known I need more sleep than most people, but I'd never attributed that to ASD.
I need at least about 8.5 hours, and left to my own devices can go 9-10 hours.
Unfortunately, I often only get about 7 hours and really struggle to get through the day.

I used a fitbit for a while, too, and found I tend towards longer total time in 'deep sleep' but less 'REM sleep' than the average person. It isn't a notably large difference, though.

I'll have to get one just to track my sleep.

But if you get a fitbit make sure it is a model that takes sleep measurements. Not all fitbit do this.

I was gonna say No but then I saw everyone elses comments...
I must be strange. I only sleep a couple hours a night. I wish I could sleep long periods! Some nights I never fall asleep at all, but I seem to do pretty alright (in my mind) the next day. However, I NEED my midday nap. Its typically short-half an hour maybe?-but I ALWAYS nap in the middle of the day (or sometimes later if I was busy) till something (like my mother) inevitably wakes me up. Still though, I definitely dont get several hours of deep sleep each day.
Its ironic cause I have the hardest time sleeping at night but I am an EXPERT at falling asleep anywhere else! Lmao I always sleep in cars and curled up in chairs etc. (Just cant sleep on planes. Ive tried)

Besides when you are asleep, you are more vulnerable

On the other hand, since I have nothing else to do with my "life", might as well sleep

In my case, I've been dealing with sleep issues as early as age 8 or so.

Almost most days, sleeping past midnight and asleep mostly during the day -- including times of entire class periods. Around that age or so, I was just lucky enough to find my learning style and have passing grades.
This continued until a year after graduating 2 years of college.

My sleep length wildly varies.
At my healthiest and balanced state, I'd only need 6 hours with consistent sleep schedule.
If I'm stressed but still healthy, it goes longer than 8 hours and usually consistent sleep pattern.
If I'm at least a bit whacked, it can go for less than 3 hours to an entire day depending how worse I made so far, with wildly varied sleep patterns.

And my sleep issues isn't just related to autism.
I have issues breathing through my nose for most of my waking life, and breathing through my mouth in long terms won't do any good. But so is sneezing or coping with stuffy nose for every hour for the entire times as long as humidity kicks in.
Then this leaves my sleep time and my breathing. I won't be surprised if I have some undiagnosed form of sleep apnea or a more discrete form of insomnia.

'Restorative sleep' seem to be a rare thing to me. As it happened to me with having enough that from a night's sleep, no matter how long, a very few times --
and there's a damn huge difference in my functioning.
The effect can lasts for days before I end up not able to 'feel' what I've been missing for years.

And yes, I hate sleep. I've been hating it for most of my life.
Partially because it usually messes me up than recharge me, if I'm sick and take a nap I don't usually feel better, and if I end up taking a nap it left me more tired, twitchy all over than me with more than enough caffeine consumed.
Partially because whenever I go to bed even without insomnia and there's the exhaustion, with lights off and all conforts and reasons to be in bed, there's my breathing -- or worse, sneezing, and kept me up involuntarily past bed times and putting me on near state of meltdown.
Partially it eats too much of my time if I have to deviate from whatever routine I'm needing to maintain. I prefer the deviate said need.
Partially because no one takes this seriously for various reasons above -- as I'm slowly resolving this it may still take years before I could fully afford a room costumed for my 'sleep needs' in order to 'wake right' than to rely on some random every night of a chance how much functioning I'll have for the day.
And partially because of the above, I don't think I'd do really well with waking up anywhere else even if I can practically sleep anywhere. Yes I can sleep through whatever discomforts and pollution, but me waking up is a different story. Me waking up wrongly, no matter how short the sleep or nap, means hours of taking my bearings for the whole day ahead and/or be snappy and disregulated throughout the day which frustrated me even more.

I feel like I usually need 10 hours of sleep, sometimes end up with 11 or 12 hours. It feels like I have an incredibly high amount of REM sleep as it feels like I do a lot of dreaming over night. If I get less than 10 hours of sleep, I usually will try to nap if thats possible, and often can pretty easily have a nap, unless I have just had some coffee, in which case I will probably not fall asleep for several hours.

I am fine with 6 hours of sleep, sometimes I try to go to bed earlier to get closer to 8 hours since that is the supposed correct amount, but whenever I do that it seems like I just end up waking up and not being able to get back to sleep easily.

As for not getting as much REM sleep that some people have mentioned, I am not so sure about that...I get a lot of random, crazy dreams sometimes to the point I feel kind of overwhelmed by that when I wake up. There have certainly been a few times I wake up and I'm relieved because the dreams over. But then half the time I forget what I was dreaming about within seconds of waking up.
