I'm tactile defensive, and my daughter has auditory processing difficulties. I also have trouble with depth perception.

How is that possible? My kids and I are PLAGUED with sensory issues. Especially when tired or stressed. I actually have to tell my sister who is ALSO 'one of us' that I'm feeling overstim'd and have to leave during conversations.

I thought AS and sensory issues went hand in hand. Mine drive me insane most of the time.

Are you sure you have AS? Or anything similar to Autism for that matter..?

Im constantly plagued by my highly oversensitive hearing overstimming me..

WOW Tim Tex! I guess you ARE! This is one thing that really steered me towards the idea of autism/AS.

No. NT's tend not to have sensory issues.

25 Jul 2007, 2:53 am

C'mon there are NTs out there with sensory issues. Look at my NT brother. He hated the sound of people chewing, he hated being touched and hugged without permission, he has sensitive smell and taste and he was a picky eater. But he has gotten better now but his smell is still strong.

NLD's have sensory issues too and so do dyspraxics and you can have dyspraxia without having AS and you can have sensory ingretion disorder and not have AS or autism. So NTs can have it too.

My sensory issues are minor though. They were worse when I was a kid but my mother took care of it.

No you're Not the only one.
Although I can't say that I don't have any(mostly light, smell, taste and texture), I never understood them to be very much out of the normal range because as much as they might bother me I still can tarolate them. they don't keep me from functioning normally (ASD normal that is).

Actually when I'm overfocused, which I am most of the time, I almost totally shut down any sensory input apart from what I'm focusing on.

And People stop saying he doesn't have AS. Because although most AS'ers have them, sensory issues are not even part of the criteria.

likedcalico, notice that I use the word "tend" in that sentence. Not "all" or "every" or "without fail".

It was worse when i was a kid but not that bad, even less so now, I work in a very buissy warehouse where everyone drived motorized vehicled (forklifts, powerjacks, high lifts and tuggers) and the noise and movement get to me, chaos is hard to deal with, thats an sensory issue. 2 many ppl talking at once, i cant think of anything else at the moment, it was slightly worse as a kid tho, i can deal now.

how?

I did occupational therapy and it cured most of it, same as dyspraxia, now I have good balance and not very clumsy.
