I called a bookstore in our town and asked if they had any books on Asperger's. I think the person that answered the phone thought it was a prank at first. I just cannot say Asperger's without it sounding like I'm saying Ass-burgers. I'm in the U.S.A. and that is how it is said here.

I vote for a name change! What about you, would you like to see the name changed? What would you want to change the name to? When someone changes the name of a disorder or disease, who exactly is responsible for that?

I don't say it right... I learned about it through reading and adapted my own pronunciation... like I do with mayn things.

And "as" I say more like "as"... not ass.

There is no B in that word... I don't know where it comes from.

I get around the "assburger" problem by pronouncing the word differently. Instead of saying "ASperger" (first syllable stressed), I pronounce it "asPERger" (second syllable stressed). While there's still some resemblance to "assburger", it's far less noticeable, which reduces the possibility of NTs making fun of our condition.

Don’t try to change it, that’s my advice. A new term would only cause confusion. Some would use it, most would not. And many people would believe that it refers to a completely new syndrome.

Also, “Asperger's” is a globally accepted term, and this is a good reason for not meddling with it. English-speaking people can at least agree with Tony Attwood who in “The Complete Guide to Asperger’s Syndrome” points out that it is fortunate that we are not supposed to use “Ssucharewa’s syndrome” after dr Ewa Ssucharewa, a Russian scientist who published a paper on the matter already in 1926.

Good points all! I more for a descriptive name change, one that tells the people what it is!

One of my co-workers years ago was named, Qe'Phaen and he pronounced it Kevin! He said that nobody ever got it right.

so something like HFA or NVLD may be better in the long run.

I agree with Pugly - I pronounce the as like the word as, not like ass. I also make a point of saying p (an unvoiced letter) not b (a voiced letter). I would say syndrome after it, too, if you're going to be saying it to some stranger. I say it as infrequently as possible, though, because of the fear of having some moron think ass-burger is a clever joke. The name IS unfortunate.

I know it isn't much consolation, but the actual Austrian pronounciation (I couldn't pronounce pronounciation for a while...) is Ah-s-per-ger. A is pronounced as in car, s-as English, p as in pet e as in play and apart from g which is pronounced as in get (not as in german) the rest is same as English...

I say the "A" like an "O" and the "S" like a "Z" so that it sounds like "OZ-per-gers."
