I have an interest in assistive technology, especially as it pertains to us on the spectrum. Do you use any kind of assistive tech? What does it do for you? I have an iPad that’s outfitted with an AAC app for my nonverbal episodes, several different apps that teach things like social skills and self-care, a social stories app where I write my own stories that act as reminders or guides in high-stress situations, a visual schedule app that I can use to remind myself of the steps in my routines, and a good number of sensory apps that provide calming auditory or visual input. I also have my iTunes library so I always have access to my music, which can be calming when I’m anxious. One of my most valuable apps is “ICE4Autism” which is an “in case of emergency” app designed specifically for those with autism. It includes our diagnosis and unique triggers, and how to respond to them; a button on the home page specifically for texting emergency contacts, medical info, insurance, etc. I feel much safer knowing I have it.
So, what kind of assistive technology do you use? What would things be like for you if you didn’t have it?
As a side note, I have an android tablet that used to function as my assistive tech, but I switched to apple because the range of apps available for autism through apple is way higher than what’s on offer for android.

In college I needed to use a scientific calculator to pass my statistics course. I also needed to use a computer since the course was online. I use the Android app iHeartRadio so I can stream my favorite radio stations in the morning before work, it helps me relax and prepare mentally for the day at work. It feels like social interaction listening to the radio because the VJs are usually talking most of the show. This is a ritual for me. I also stream Catholic radio sometimes because I enjoy the shows, it feels like social interaction and sometimes I like to listen when I'm having difficulty falling asleep.
