The chemicals released by the onions are not nearly as volatile when cold. Just keep them in the refrigerator and they won't bother you.

I rarely slice room temperature onions and so on those rare occasions (maybe once ever ten years) when I slice one that isn't cold from the refrigerator, the tearing catches me completely by surprise.

Refrigerate the onions.

^ Our onions always come directly from the fridge, and they still make my mother tear up.

I wonder if she might be extremely susceptible to them. How does onions straight out of the refrigerator compare to onions that haven't been refrigerated?

She must be. She tears up if she is in the kitchen when I cut them, or even if she enters just afterwards.

I have no idea how onions are if they're not directly from the fridge though. Ours always are.

i've never cried in the presence of an onion being cut, i remember being with a bunch of my cousins whose eyes were all watering, and i felt nothing o.o

however, eating raw onions gives me a headache, which is odd i think since it seems like a reverse effect

Onions do bother my eyes considerably, even the sweeter white varieties. But I have found that holding my head a short distance to the right or left helps a lot. The irritating substance that is released goes straight up and this way you can side step at least most of it.

I think its entirely possible that some people find onions more irritating than others. Just like while most people react to the oil in poison ivy by breaking out in an itchy rash, there are some people who have no reaction at all.

Sometimes they hurt my eyes, most times they don't. I think it depends on the type, quantity, type of cut.
My worst experience was cutting red onions with a meat slicer by the bucket full at a restaurant in Colorado.

Yes, different varieties of onions have different impact forces. Now I am not afraid of any kind of onion, because I have a secret weapon! ! ! If you can't change the onion, why don't you change the way you cut it? For example, cut them faster. Give up a tool like Mandolin and look for an onion cutter with a container. Onions will no longer hurt you.

Goggles are good, but first, check that your knife is razor-sharp, and leave the root area to last. The mechanism is a fine, acidic spray released by onion cells as they are crushed while still under osmotic pressure. Cut, don't crush.

I find breathing through the mouth instead of the nose also helps.

Well I don't usually cut very many onions, my boyfriend does not really like them in food so we usually use green onions, shallots and garlic instead and even though I never really had an issue with onions myself I kind of like how stuff tastes without regular onions and substituting the green onions, shallots and garlic for any recipe that calls for onion.

Those all seem to be a bit more flavorful anyways, so really no loss not using the regular onions.

I have very sensitive eyes to begin with, that tear up when irritated. So with that being said, I don't tolerate onions well. Don't get me wrong, I know it's painful for neurotypicals, but I think my level is leagues worse than NT levels of onion tolerance.

Have you tried keeping them in the refrigerator?

Yes, I have and it does help, or dabbing water on them. But the refrigerator trick works better.
