I wouldn't say I have hypersensitive hearing , but some nights I get into bed and there's buzzing noise. It's hard to get off to sleep then . Now I'm up and there's that high pitched whining usually only a cat or dog can hear.

Do you possibly have tinnitus? I have it from having a lot of ear infections, so I just constantly hear ringing in one of my ears.

Yeah, when it's quiet I can often hear a high-pitched buzzing. At first I thought it was coming from some electric appliance, like the wifi modem. Then I thought it might be tinnitus from listening to music on headphones for years and years. But I'm not really sure what it is.

This used to be constant for me. I always could hear the old cathode ray tubes in televisions. I could tell who was watching TV when I walked down the street. I also could hear the neighbor's TV making that noise. It kept me up at night.

I don't hear that as often anymore but I do hear other noises that are hard to trace.

I can usually hear something, even if it's just a faint ringing in my ears. Maybe we can call it "the sound of silence" because it's always there. I always wear earplugs to sleep btw, and have for about ten years now. I'm a really light sleeper.

I thought I was the only one. My parents were confused that I'd appear to get up in the middle of the night, march into the living room and turn the TV off when the box was off and the screen was on (or same idea in early mornings). I can hear it and it annoys the s**t out of me.

I don't typically hear a ringing, but I can often hear movements of bodily fluids, like the blood pumping in vessels near my ears.

What you are describing certainly sounds like tinnitus.

I'm a really light sleeper too: I can remember having a plant in my bedroom that had lots of leaves. It would occassionally shed a tiny leaf. The noise would wake me immediately. When I figured what was waking me, the plant was rehomed.

Yes, earplugs are the best. They changed my life. I can't imagine settling down to sleep without them.

Wifi maies a high pitched sound. Is bad here as I seem to be the only one who ears it and no one lets me turn it off so I can get sleep.

Also, modern electric energy efficient lights make a high pitched sound.

I can hear high pitched buzzing sounds from electronics all the time. At night I can the buzzing from my TV, receivers, and wifi modem even though they are in the next room. Most nights it doesn't bother me, but if I'm in a bad mood they will seem more annoying than normal.

I have tinnitus.
I have hearing sensitivities.
I have hearing processing issues.
I have lack of hearing filters.
And I also have wider hearing range.

First one had no external source, but it can worsen by external triggers.
Second one can be dealt with by desensitization, sensory tolerance and thresholds, or wearing equipments.
Third can worsen happen by worse mental, physical health and age, and is more of a communication issue.
Forth is built in my neurology.

The last one is supposed to wear down by age yet I can still hear electricity, certain sounds others don't...
I can still sense inaudible sounds and wider range vibrations.

It sounds like tinnitus. I use a background sound generator app on my phone to fall asleep. I need it for my wife's snoring and it helps with tinnitus too.

I'm not totally dismissing tinnitus , but am wondering whether it can be an on/off just while in bed thing.

I suspect I've got a mix of tinnitus and some kind of sensitivity, as I can always hear buzzing but sometimes worse than others.

I have to have the wi-fi switched off to sleep - if it gets left on it feels like my brain stays "switched on" all night and I don't sleep well. But I don't really hear it, it's more just an awareness somewhere in my head (?). Or I might just be a crazy hypochondriac...
