For the autistic adults that don't have a job, how do you no
I get SSI mostly for bipolar.... But I hate it...
I'm currently trying to get an unpaid Americorps but work from home 3 month position... I found out you can come back again later though... And you get an education award... I'm thinking if I get the internship I can use the money toward getting some sort of Masters...
I find out if I get it soon!
I live in a based on income apartment, that helps a lot, my rent is a little under $200 dollars...

FINALLY diagnosed with ASD 2/6/2020
I worked with them before I got diagnosed. I applied with other conditions. The services weren't very useful for my particular situation; I needed to know what sort of job I could actually do, and no one helped me with that (not that I did a good job of asking for such help). I doubt they actually have access to very many jobs.
VR gave me money to pursue a job goal I'd already identified, but I wasn't actually well-suited to that career, so I ultimately failed. When I tried to get another sort of job, the job coach could not find anything suitable for my noise and visual sensitivity nor anything related to what I'd been doing as self-employment. Just thinking about the work she put in kind of depresses me because my situation was hopeless. I also cringe a bit thinking about all the money that was spent on me.
Mountain Goat : When your Mum dies you would be eligible for more benefits. The issue is mainly about having somewhere to live. If your Mum is renting then it would be useful for you to know who the landlord is and what kind of tenancy it is because someone in your position may have the right to take over the tenancy when your Mum dies. If that is so you could then stay there, or move to another smaller property if you wanted. I hope it is a long way off yet.
Star Kid: I know what you mean about the money, I feel guilty about the benefits I have received, but it is not your fault that society has "disabled" you by not allowing you a suitable environment in which to work. Many of us have talents and skills but cannot use them because the workplace is unsuitable either socially, sensorily or cognitively.
I have done my best to be employed and tried self-employment. Working from home is fine, but I needed someone to do the people bit, which I didn't have.
To those that are still trying - the people, the type of work, and where you will be doing it are the most important considerations, in my view.
When she dies it might be difficult because I am one of three brothers, and one has lots of children so if they come to live here I will be shoved out, but I doubt they would want to live up here, as they would loose benefits and the costs of travelling etc, but my youngest brother is the issue as he has always lived here. Each time Mum wants to move, he keeps doing things to prevent her selling. So if Mum dies two of us would be ready to sell and my youngest and his wife would do all he could to stop the sale if that makes sense?
It is not that we don't get on. We all get on. We just all have different viewpoints so it would be difficult.
At the moment things are strange because we live on one of the most saught after places and many developers would love to get their hands on this property, and all around us apart from one or two properties have all been bought up by wealthy people who are waiting for the new developments to the seaside villages below. (We overlook them). It is said to be the new "Costa De Sol" and one of the last undeveloped seaside coastlines in Europe with lovely beaches and pretty little harbours to match. There are also new roads coming including a new large bridge which will bridge a famous beauty spot just across the estuary with this area, so the whole aeea has very ambitious plans. One local seaside village a certain well known celebrity now owns half of it as I was told that he has been buying up houses there every time one comes for sale.
But due to this, each time we have tried to sell, the developers have infultrated all the estate agents to prevent ordinary people from buying and their offers are far lower. This mountain prices used to be almost double the villages below, but since these new plans this mountain area has suddenly halfed in price by the local estate agents.
When we moved up here this property value was the price of five small terraced houses. The offers we have had and the price the estate agents say it is worth would hardly pay for just two! And even people who live round here say to us "Is that all? You can get double that price if you sold it as a wrecked house".
So anyway. We do not have a clue what is going on so we are sitting tight.

Vocational Rehab (VR for short) is an unemployment branch that specializes in helping people with developmental disorders (such as people on the spectrum) find proper employment.
I'm still working on my degree and my school says they usually are successful with setting graduates up with jobs fortunately. I really hope they will be able to find me something after I graduate. I've never really looked into VR but I know people who have and they don't speak highly of the local services available but I still think of it as an option if the school is unable to find me a job.
