I've been described as a "grumpy old man" by all kinds of people gong back to as young as 5 years old. I've never been "carded" even when I was well under-age (but I don't drink much - then or now) But yes, I have had people guess at my age and they are usually 5-7 years off (younger than I am)

I never had trouble buying alcohol or cigarettes for my mom growing up, so its hard to guess just how other people perceive me.

In this thread people are acting like that is a bad thing. Sure it has its bad sides getting carded at age 30 was annoying but paying children's prices at 18 years old was cool.

Getting carded at 28 is annoying.
Getting carded at 38 is a compliment.

People usually think I'm like 15-16 at first. And then when they eventually find out that I'm 22 they find it hard to believe me.

Yes, where I volunteer I was assumed to be in my early 30s even though I'm 46. Part of that may be because I haven't gone grey yet and also because I act younger than my age. I still feel like a teenager a lot of the time, too young to be involved in adult conversations. That can be frustrating because I'm not taken seriously.

I'm 35 but I usually get late 20's

Fine by me I guess. If I was late twenties though, I would surely make up for lost time

Yes. I am 54 but I look 30-something for whatever reason.

That is supposed to be a good thing but I find it just stops me making women friends. They are shocked when they find out my real age and get all bltchy because they immediately start quizzing me for my 'secret' of how to look young. They think I'm lying when I say there isn't a secret, they think I'm lying about my age etc. etc.

Also people treat me as a youngster and are patronising, saying 'you needn't worry about that at your age' and talk over me because they think I'm not as old as them.

I can't wait for my hair to go totally grey so I look my real age.

Sometimes, but that's only because I'm short. I'm going to be a senior in high school this August, but a few people I've recently encountered thought that I was a freshman due to my height (I'm 5 feet exactly, so I'm not even that short).

In terms of my facial appearance, I actually look older than most of my peers due to my hairstyle, plucked eyebrows, and makeup.

Basically, some people have mistaken me for being younger than my age, whereas others have mistaken me for being older than I am. Hell, I've even had a few pizza delivery guys make me sign a receipt before giving me my pizza recently, likely due to the fact that I do look like an adult facially (despite the fact that I won't actually be an adult until next year).

Being short with a mature face is a pretty interesting experience.

I'm in my 40s and people think I'm in my 20s. I don't mind. People expect less from me than they do from my prissy, younger sister.

I'm going to be 30 soon but I still regularly encounter people who assume I'm a teenager. This is partly because of how I look, and I think partly because of how I talk and act (not on purpose, I just didn't change very much as I got older).

I think that I'm actually very lucky that people see me this way, because it makes people more patient/kinder towards me.

I worry that once I start getting wrinkles and look my age, people will be less forgiving of my "eccentricities" or my difficulty doing certain things because it won't seem "cute" anymore.

Does anyone else have this experience? Do you see it as a good thing or a bad thing? And if you're an older person, how did people's behaviour toward you change when you became noticeabley older?
I look younger than I am, I act younger than i am because I am younger than I am. (I am much younger than my actual chronological age) it's definitely a good thing.
