Even though this may be a controversial subject, I posted a thread about my college experiences on drinking and meeting/making new friends, and I remember people telling me that even though they didn't get involved with drinking during college or once they turned 21, they found other forms of entertainment or had different interests than drinking socially with friends.

However, since I don't judge people's interests along with what they like to do in their free time, I have some questions about drinking socially and why you may or may not participate in it, due to several factors and personal beliefs...

1) Do you drink socially with your friends? Do you have any friends/family members who drink socially?

2) What things have you heard about drinking (along with certain factors like medication) that made you not want to try alcohol?

3) Would you ever want to try alcohol once you turn 21 or if you're 21+ and haven't tried alcohol yet or took a break from it?

On an extra note, I hope my thread topic doesn't offend anyone, even though I'm curious about the effects of drinking on the spectrum...

I have a chronic illness so drinking makes me feel worse physically, so I don't drink, or only very rarely. But in the past when I did have the occasional beer or two it definitely made me feel more social and more relaxed, and it was easier to have interactions with people, especially when in groups.

Most people I know drink socially, and I think statistically most adults in the Western world drink alcohol at least sometimes. It's true that some people will develop a serious drinking problem, so that's certainly something to be aware of and cautious about, but in general most people deal with alcohol well and don't overuse it. I would certainly drink beer to try to have slightly less painful social interactions if I didn't have my illness.

Though I drank occasionally during 2 years of college the fact that alcoholic beverages tasted mostly like rotting vegetables turned me off toward them.

Got an unsolicited laugh from friends when I finally said that out loud.
They pointed out that alcoholic drinks pretty much are a product decomposing plant matter.

Of course this was not the reference they used back in the 1980s,
https://www.americastestkitchen.com/coo ... nd-rotting

Quote:
Mark asked: “What is the difference between fermentation and rotting?”

We like to think there’s no overlap, no chance of confusing fermentation and rotting, and I’d love to pull out a simple, clean distinction between the two but unfortunately things are a little fuzzy. (Like mold.)

Both terms refer to the same realm of biological processes, in which microorganisms transform food. Interestingly, unlike most cooking procedures, the transformations happen whether or not we initiate them. Unless foodstuffs are specially preserved, bacteria, molds, and yeasts will spontaneously seize the opportunity to digest their sugars, fats, and proteins, creating a wild array of new compounds. When we like the results of the transformation, we call it fermentation; when we don’t, we call it rotting.

The drinking age is 18 where I went to Uni.

1)
I drink socially yes.
My friends and family all drink socially.

2)
I know that alcohol doesn't mix with some personality types or some medications.
I'm staunchly against drinking and driving or the potential of assault under the influence.
I've seen the effects of alcoholism first hand.

3)
I tried alcohol before 18. It's not a big deal to me if it's done responsibly.

Don't drink, have no interest in drinking, and never will drink.

I don't have many friends but the friends I have got don't really drink. I think I would have more friends if I did drink though, as the UK culture seems to center around drinking and weed, and if you don't do either then you're more or less an outcast.
Nobody in my family are alcoholics but most of my relatives seem to drink, both socially and at home.

Hangovers (I have severe emetophobia so anything that comes with even the slightest chance of vomiting is enough to make me avoidant).
Embarrassing myself (I've heard of people getting themselves in trouble or doing embarrassing things when drunk, or being aggressive, etc, and I don't like the thought of losing control of myself).

Not really. I've never been drunk before.

Though I don't really need alcohol to enhance my social skills, it can sometimes make me feel bored at parties quite quick, especially if everyone else is drinking. I prefer doing social activities that don't involve drinking, because I'm more able to relax and enjoy myself. So I avoid bars and clubs, and I'll only go into a pub during the day for lunch.

I'm 33 now and I've never relied on alcohol to pass my life away so I'm not really going to start now. I just got used to living a teetotal life. Sleeping is what I do to escape or relax, which is probably a substitute for drinking alcohol. But for me non-alcoholic drinks can relax me. I often pour myself a glass of orange juice or lemonade or milkshake or coke in the evenings and it's very satisfying.

I may be quite socially isolated due to being teetotal but at least my liver will love me when I'm old.

Don't have any friends any more, stopped drinking years ago. I have family members who drink socially.

Never heard anything that put me off drinking.

I'm teetotal, I don't want to start drinking again as it turns me into an as*hole (well, more of an as*hole)

I should point out I don't have friends either lol, but if I did I'd have a drink.

It's not like I drink all the time.

Only when we lose major sporting events like always.

I drink lightly. Occasionally I will buy (flavored) wine coolers, and I like sweet alcoholic drinks. I will occasionally order sweet wine with my meal at restaurants.

1. Occasionally.
2. Mostly the getting drunk and saying stuff you normally wouldn't say part.

I don't drink. Though I have tried alcohol.

Having an alcholic parent really didn't make it something that seemed appealing.

It's a hell of a drug, and extremely accessible.

I strongly dislike alcohol and always have.

It's addictive, destroys your liver and other organs, you can overdose from it and if you are addicted and stop cold turkey you can die from the withdrawal. From your body's perspective, it is poison.

It's extremely dangerous and yet one of the most available substances. But for those who love it, more power to them. Go for it. I am all for personal choice.

Weed is what is for me though. It calms me down, helps me think and process issues.

I don't like it because it gives me the same dehydrated feeling that coffee gives me. Anything that makes me feel like that, I steer clear of.

The cause of, and solution to all of life's problems.

me + alcohol = disaster. Lets just say I learned "what not to do" in a series of really painful lessons over many years before I finally "got it". slow learner, I guess but at age 71 the lesson is well learned now. My life is saner and healthier the less alcohol I allow into it.
