Is it applicable to anyone else here? Maybe I'm a bit paranoid, but I feel like many people don't believe me when I say I do OK on high range IQ tests, but struggle with everyday practical tasks to the point I need a fair amount of support.

I'm the same firemonkey. My adaptive functioning is abysmal (assessed at between 1st and 5th percentile in the various areas), yet I earned academic honours and I consider myself quite bright despite an obviously spiky profile. That's kind of a tell-tale sign of ASD. We're generally smart but our EF and ability to deal with change / adaptation is really poor.

In the US. School system, the term for that is “twice exceptional” - gifted and ND, and they are often some of my favorite kids!

Ummm, hello, it's a known stereotype: the absent-minded professor. Completely my gig. I say what's easy for others is hard for me, what's hard for others is easy for me. I am challenged to tie my shoelaces or make cookies from scratch, but give me a 500,000 point data set and I'm in heaven.

I think that applies to a lot of us

TBH, this is why I asked for a demotion at work. I got sick and tired of taxing my adaptive functioning and then getting complaints about why I'm not doing things that are "really simple." They are simple things that I could do, if I wasn't responsible for training and managing myself without access to any of the information necessary to do either thing well. And if they were that simple, I'd probably already be doing them. Sigh.

I do think that in a lot of cases that's what's going on when somebody has a higher than normal IQ, or whatever measure of intellect we want to go by. Being smart is one thing, having the intellect to process all the stuff that we tend to need to process because our brains don't naturally filter out a lot of the information coming in is quite another. Prioritizing and filtering things based on what's going on are always going to be a bit of a challenge when it's not being done for the benefit of engaging in our special interests.

I do quite well at high range IQ tests, but ask me to do a practical, multistep, task and I'll really struggle.

I know I did far better on the second IQ test I had to take for benefits, and now my sister treats me like I need full time care, I don't need full time care.

Only yesterday I found my membership card from when I was a member of MENSA. I can’t even find my own arse using both hands and a streetmap.
