When I was a teen I recall hearing the grownups at a party comparing notes about travel, and about how contrary the French are.

A couple told a tale of asking the train station for a ticket "to Paris", but they ended up in a one horse country hamlet named "Parris". The upshot being that the Frenchies dont show any mercy to English speaking tourists. If you dont pronounce the name of their capital city the French way of "PAR-reeeee", and do it the English way of "Paris" they will not hesitate to indulge in "malicious compliance" just to stick to you Anglosaxons! :)

Only if you document your concerns or have witnesses

I get what you mean, like an autistic person could probably accidently maliciously comply...even if it wasn't the intention. That being said I would not say I'd never willfully indulge in malicious compliance, but I could totally see doing it on accident to like taking something way to literally.

I have practiced this both at work and in my personal life. At work, I will give one warning if I feel something will not work and if they insist, I will then do what they want and if it fails, that is on my boss. Granted, I do have a boss that is willing to admit failure. As for personal life, it has been along the lines of someone telling me not to visit them anymore and so I do so with no conditions and let them decide if that is what they really want. You would be surprised at how many people figure out that they do not really want what they say they want.

Another term for this is "Uncivil Obedience" and is the opposite action of civil disobedience but is looking for the same result. The idea is to follow the law to the letter to show its unintended consequences. For example, a group of people decided to drive on a highway at the speed limit of 55 mph in the Los Angeles area even though traffic is going much faster to show how unsafe the current speed limit really was. The obedience part makes it hard for law enforcement because they cannot do anything to someone following the rules to the letter.

I LOVE malicious compliance. It brings out my inner petty!

Actually no.

I dont hear much similarity to Tom Petty.

But I will go along with it being him if you say so.

It's him.

Quote:
He also had a recurring role as the voice of Elroy "Lucky" Kleinschmidt in the animated comedy series King of the Hill.

I can see that happening to me, and I think it has happened to me. I'm sure there have been occasions when I was just trying to follow instructions but I was somehow deemed wrong and spiteful!

I would never do it willfully either. I wouldn't even know how.
