Age1600,

I am like you, except my obsession is cat breeds. I know every breed of cat and know the different types of cat within a breed. Siamese are my favorites.

I think one of my most unusual obsessions was an in-depth study of the Ukraine. I was very fascinated with that country and wanted to know everything about it's history.

My obsession was, and still is, the 80s. I own many 80s movies on both DVD and VHS. I have lots of 80s CDs (both bought and home-made). I watch reality programs that prominently feature 80s stars ("Celebrity Fit Club", "Rock Of Love", "Flavor Of Love", "The Surreal Life", the occasional episode of "Hogan Knows Best"). I own many books either written in the 80s or about 80s culture. I talk to several 80s personalities on occasion (Stacey Q and Kelli Maroney are friends of mine).

The best way to understand it would be to read this article I wrote for RetroJunk entitled "Don't Call Me A Poser". It is a little outdated (It was written when I was 23 years old and still used the word "cheesy" under certain circumstances...That's changed since I first wrote it in 2006).

Have a look: "Don't Call Me A Poser!"

I also collected slate, to break apart. I don't know why I like to split it, it just makes me feel good in a way. BUT NOT SO MUCH AS TAKING A HAMMER TO THEM AND SPLITTING THEM APART!! !

OMG, I guess I'm not the only rock collector here. When I was in 3rd and 4th Grade, a whole bunch of friends and I would dig for rocks in our grass schoolyard during recess, then carry them home in our backpacks. The teachers never particularly liked that, as it would get the school dirty. At one point, we unearthed a massive piece of terra cotta, possibly from a pipe or a pot, and I thought it was the most important thing to ever happen on the face of the earth. I wasn't too happy when people told me not to take it home.

i just discovered and registered on this forum today!

Finally, someone who understands the obsessions...

When I was a kid one of the weirdest obsessions I had was telegraph and telephone poles/lines... I still find them fascinating.

Also anything related to pollution. Everyone thought I was really weird... esp. considering I was 10 years old at the time. Reading college level books on the environment is something my parents didn't want other people to see.

And, of course, maps and atlases... My parents got my a Rand McNally Road atlas of the USA and Canada when I was around 10 as well... How many other kids would have got one of those in their stocking?

Me too...I was a rock collector....I was always dragging home interesting rocks i found on the playground..etc and then learning about them.....i really loved petrified wood.....esp. petrified palm wood, which has a beautiful speckled texture to it.
I was crazy about rocks for years...and crystals...

I seemed to know alot about rocks when I was young too.....

I remember when my 5th grade class went to camp for a week, and part of our camping experience was visiting a quarry that had all different kinds of rocks in it...and I was like the authority...telling all the kids the different kinds of rocks they had and I actually briefly made some friends then..they were impressed with my knowledge...it was fun...

Well, I could say the same thing. I feel a little less weird now...

Do you mean the automatic car washes or the hand washes, or both?

Pylons are kind of inspiring, aren't they? The horror movie "The Langoliers" uses the image of electricity pylons leading off over a stretch of forest to suggest something menacing lurking behind the horizon. When the monsters finally arrive, they start chewing on the pylons, and you see them collapsing in slow-motion. 8O

This is kind of embarrassing, but I have a fixation on making lists. These days it's "Favourite 100" (books, movies etc.) lists, but as a teen I dreamed of becoming a writer, and I kept making lists with possible titles for books I hoped to write. Needless to say, I never got around to writing them. :?

Oh yeah, I'm ALWAYS making lists. And iTunes playlists - I'm always making sorting songs by theme, title, my top 25, summer songs, winter songs, sad songs, fast songs...

When I was little I was obsessed with stories and making sound effects for them. I would take a tape recorder into the bathroom and tell a story, and I almost always had a big storm in it, so as I said, "And then there was a big storm!" I'd flush the toilet and rustle the potpourri to make storm sound effects.

I have my weirdest obsession now.

It is about the main character of the movie "Witches of Eastwick". At the end he turned into a weird thing. That thing is my obsession. I always think about it and draw pictures of it.

As a kid, my biggest obsession was probably rocks too! I was always out in front of my house looking for cool rocks in our gravel in the front of the house. My uncle was a gemologist (or something) and he always had the coolest rocks at his house. I'd go to the local mall every time there was a flea market because they always had tables set up for people who sold semi-precious stones. I can't tell you how much paper route money I wasted on those!

As a teenager, it was models. The female kind. I knew all of their stats, what magazines they were on/in, what campaigns they modeled for, etc. Doesn't sound too strange for a teenaged boy, until you know that I also happen to be gay. Not the easiest obsession to explain when that's the case.

Nowadays, as an adult, I've moved on to movies/tv stuff. I'm always spouting off facts and lines from movies. I'm still interested in models and rocks, but not as much as I used to be.

I memorized how long every traffic light lasted on my usual routes to school, work, friends, family's houses. I got to the point where, if I was at an unfamiliar traffic light, I could tell you how long it was going to last after sitting there a few seconds.

I loved pogs, too!
