I don't mind the hair washing part. It's nice for sensory reasons. It feels good, the water sprayer thing is always a perfect temperature, and they use high-end conditioners that make my hair really shiny. The best part is that you don't have to watch it happening in a mirror like the haircutting part, and you don't have to make small-talk with the person. You can close your eyes to avoid the bright lights, and you won't be able to hear whatever stupid dance music they're playing. You can only hear the water. It's the only part of the appointment I don't mind, because the mirror and small-talk part is torture for me. I don't even use mirrors in my own house.

The running water sound does help me too. .. and they make me take out my noise cancelling earbuds .
Snd am learning about doing innocuous small talk about stuff. but I normally never initiate the conversation.
Is ferls nice to have mice hair, but it feels nicer to leave their place of business.Afterwards 8O

I LOVE it ! !! She's gentle and throws in a 15 minute massage at the end. Pure bliss.

I also LOVE having my teeth scraped by a dental hygienist -- not the ultrasonic gizmo, but the old fashioned way. I guess I have sensory "seeking."

How do you all get your hair styled without going through uncomfortable processes like these?

I ask, because when I started on the job market for a receptionist position, I was told point blank by the head of the job agency that I needed to do something about my hair and told me "they only want the most attractive ladies up front". :wall: (Also note that this was a job agency associated with disability services...)

That sexist nonsense aside, last time I managed to get a Data Entry job where I didn't have to worry much, but now I'm back in the job market and have started applying for Receptionist positions because Data Entry jobs have been far and few in between and haven't even given me interviews. And even though it was sexist nonsense, I'm afraid it's true. I'm not the prettiest girl and nothing can change that, but certainly my styling of my hair could use much improvement. So I wonder if anyone has any advice.

When my hair was long (back when I still had hair), I would enjoy going to the beauty parlor with my wife to get my hair washed and trimmed.  The attendants would s-l-o-w-l-y massage my head, neck, and shoulders so well that I would sometimes fall asleep.  They would never use the electric clippers -- only scissors and razors.  They usually had some of that New Age music playing (harps and flutes, mostly), the lights were not too bright, and the place smelled good. Overall, it was always a pleasant experience.
You like a bit of pampering Fnord ... sounds really nice that though to be fair
Who doesn't like a little pampering every now and then?

Can you learn to style your own hair? Or start out with a simple hairstyle that doesn't require much styling. There are YouTube videos for this. But I'm saying this as someone who has very very plain hair and is absolutely incapable of styling it.

I like it because then I don't have to wash my hair later that day. Although I do have a problem when the water is too cold or hot. Or when they rub too hard or use their fingernails.

I am sorry in advance if I say something off or rude - English is not my native language and I come from another culture.

Wow, such a phrase would piss me off completely! For a couple of weeks, I think I would become an anxiety ball of low self-esteem!.....

About hair, here is what one can do:

0 make a haircut that doesn't require everyday hair styling. One can google "haircut with no hairstyling" or something, and choose and then come to the hairdresser and show the picture and say to have a haircut that doesn't require hair styling. I use kitty cut for example.
I don't style my hair, it dries on its own after washing and I think it looks pretty.

1 Find a proper shampoo and conditioner. A good one that suits the type of hair. And find out how often hair requires washing. This drastically changed the quality of my hair one day: I always thought I had bad-quality hair before that. I wash my hair every other day cos I have very oily skin and my hair gets greasy quickly. I don't think I can post a link to the product here because that would be advertising. I think though I can say - it is not mass-market, it is something semi-professional from a hair-shop.

2 I hate everyday hair styling, it is boring as hell and I don't like to feel throughout the day my hair tightened. And I wouldn't say I like the feeling that I should sit still and don't spoil my hair. If hairstyling is required I would suggest some simple solutions without any products like wax, glue, pomade, hair dryer, or curling iron :

a simple ponytail
a simple braid
or headband with loose hair

I hope this somehow helps.

Hmm.. People with Sharp instruments buzzing around my head, while I am made to sit still...Think maybe I need to get a better context of the situation? 8O

I just cut my own hair. I can't stand someone messing with me, and I don't know what facial expression to make or what to say. It's all incredibly uncomfortable. It's almost as bad as the dentist.

I cut my own hair too, I can't walk too good, i have a walker & a wheelchair, it is hard to go places on my own. When I could walk better years ago, I went to the hairdresser, I didn't like it too much, I didn't like getting my hair wash cuz of the sink, the sink can hurt my neck, it was little loud in there & alot of lights. I love cutting my own hair, it is free, I can cut the front but the back is very hard.

I don't go anywhere to get my hair cut anymore. I have really short hair and to keep it up would mean having to make a lot of trips to the hair salon as well as extra expense. I bought some clippers and cut my own. I've saved a lot of money already.

I always ask for a dry cut. The hairdresser I go to just brushes, straightens and cuts it. I wash it, brush it and dry it myself before I go to my appointment.

I never liked how it felt on my neck (the back of the sink). Ugh. Plus the last places I went would always charge extra. Not worth it imo.

I wish I get a dry cut, years ago when I went to the hairdresser, my haircuts were good, but later there can be strain of hair that were uneven, my hair was alot curly back then.

when people don't like going to the hairdresser, is that because of Autism?

As a male its actually embarrassing for me getting a 20 something attractive female hairdresser give me a shampoo and head wash as invariably it involves a scalp massage. they know I am enjoying it. One time I had it done and the lady who was at the cash register cracked a joke about me enjoying my hair wash and I was legitimately thinking whether I was showing my getting my rocks off while getting my head massaged.
