I'm wondering if anyone else here who's aspie is hyper senstaive to light... Like Direct Sunlight, my family goes out on the boat and they all don't mind but I can't see at all when I am out on the deck. Another thing is the bright lighting at walmart gives me head-ache's

Anyone else have this happen to them ?

I can't stand too much light either, and apparently others have less of a problem with it.

Yep, I avoid going out in bright daylight. And fluorescent lights are evil.

I don't like bright light either. I also dislike the feeling of the sun on my shoulders back, it almost makes me angry. I'm up all night in part to avoid the sun.

I don't like strong smells or sounds either.

i love light, and sleep with it on most nites. this means that my electric bill is usually in the $90 range every months. you think i would learn my lesson and would rather pay a cheaper bill but oh no. :D

I live in a cave,I like it.Sometimes the light from my computer screen is so bright it hurts but I keep forgetting to change it.I was less bothered by is as a kid but light shining in my eyes or reflective of something shiney feels like fork in my eye....it has triggered migrains(I even wear those instant sunglass glasses but it doesn't seem to help.At least in my house I can use low lighting that is no overhead or in my eyes.I also work overnights shifts...part vampire.

I don't get any ill effects, but bright indoor lights feel very unpleasant.

In one large office where I was working on a temp contract, they decided that the low morale of the employees (which was due to work overload) was due to the office being too dark (it was perfect for me). So they had all the ceiling lights changed & the first day I walked in it was like the Sahara desert at noon. I was tempted to leave my sunglasses on, but I needed the job.

Even outdoors, I've always preferred early morning & evening to be outside. Those are the best times to go fishing or hunting by the way, so it looks like lots of other species feel the same way

I believe that in autistic people all the senses are heightened. It may be uncomfortable, but if we were living in a natural state (if we were still hunter-gatherers), we would be better off. So i don't think there's anything unnatural about it.

The bigger question to me is how NT's/social people got to be so insensitive.

I worked in cube farms for nearly ten years and lighting was a frequent issue. One of the reasons I was able to function in an office environment for so long is because I've always been allowed to have the fluorescent bulbs removed from my area; I would have quit any position where my cube was primarily lit with fluorescents. Not only is the buzzing annoying to me, but I can see the flickering. I wondered for awhile if I was imagining it, but I think I'm just more sensitive to it than others.

Bright natural light sometimes gave me panic attacks when I was younger, but I've gotten over that one. But fluorescent lights, no way. They don't make me sick to my stomach like they used to, but I still consider them headache-inducing and an affront to good taste.

Oddly, fluorescent lighting sometimes has the opposite effect on me than it does on many others: instead of the fake bright light keeping me awake it sometimes makes me groggy and disoriented. I often feel more alert in dim light, much more alert. Maybe my ancestors spent a lot of time concentrating in the dark or something.. ha!

Indoor lights don't bother me. Actually, I prefer them on, even in the daytime. But the sunlight just kills my eyes! But that's where sunglasses come in. 8)

If I had a dime for every time my mother has come into my room and announced I'm going to ruin my eyes reading in such a dark room I'd be rich! I'm not really a fan of alot of light either. I don't mind florescents if used in moderation. I have a lamp with five bulbs in it and I usually keep it on the setting with just two lights on. It's a little brighter now that I switched to compact florescants, but not so much that it bothers me.

I don't like real bright sunlight either, and I burn very easy that I usually am not out in the height of the day. I also prefer morning or late evening for being outside. The quality of the light then is so pleasing and the songbirds and critters in our area seem to agree with me. In good weather, I like to visit with my garden just when twilight begins. Results in the occasional mosquito bite, but it's worth it.

One of my lighting quirks is I hate overhead lights. I much prefer a lamp then the ceiling fixture. I think I use the one in my bedroom maybe twice a month at best.
