Are you surprised when people call you a hard worker?

My bosses always tell me I'm a hard worker, but it doesn't feel like I'm working that hard. Sometimes if I finish early and need to kill 20 minutes before I leave, I have a hard time not working. I have to keep my mind busy, and I am good at focusing on one thing at a time so I hate being distracted by conversation, etc. Do you think this is related to AS?

They just call you a hard worker because they don't want to acknowlege your intelligence. That's not a compliment; it's an insult.

I, too, hate it when people say I worked hard for something that comes easily to me! It makes me feel like everyone thinks I'm so stupid or ignorant or clumsy or disabled or something! My mother has done that to me, as has a teacher, but the teacher meant it in the "she does all her work" sense.

I got annoyed when teachers would say "she puts a lot of effort into her work" especially when it was some modified class they stuck me into where the work was simplified. i felt so stupid cos it was code for "she is one of a few peoples in the whole class that actually does the work".

when the boss tells me that i usually think "meh" cos the work they have me do is simple.

I don't work hard for anyone's commentary. I work hard cause it's what I want to be doing. Or not. And if they *compliment* me, I let it completely go *whoosh*. No effect. Better that way. I don't want to be in debt to anyone or their graces.

While I do try my hardest to avoid work (I'm a public servant;)), if I'm in the right job, I do tend to have the reputation as the 'can do' man. While my colleagues would carry on heaps of inane chitchat, I would shut up and write my papers.

The problem is that my current role and my previous one are not areas I'm interested in (investigations and auditing) and did not draw effectively on my skills (researching, preparing and implementing policy papers) and hence I'm flailing about not really being effective at all, which in turn means that others now have the knives out for me.

My world history teacher in grade 10 said I was a very hard worker, I think I was one of her favorite students, she said "You're just way ahead of the class, aren't you?" Because everyone else did so horribly, I got a lot of credit! I didn't even TRY! I did what I considered to be the bare minimum in her class; I just knew how to make it seem like I was serious. I made up articles (and read them to the class like they were legit) when I couldn't find any real ones for what I needed.
