:D I just had my appointment with my doctor and she said that 20mg per day was the smallest dose. (?)
I was a bit of a state, but just about managed to tell her everything.

I have to go back in 1 week to see if i'm OK, and until then i'll be on no meds at all.

Fingers crossed everything will calm down again and i can regain some self controll :)

Justin.

Sounds like a good move if you can cope........I don't really believe in meds, because they just seem to confuse things, like you never know whether you're feeling weird because of your own mind or whether it's the drugs doing it. I hope you find you're better off without them. I've heard that some people get depression when they stop taking it, but apparently it's not all that common for that to happen. I'd surround myself with plenty of comforts if I were you.

What led you to the decision to stop taking them?

My depression went too long untreated and I will probably have to keep taking my 60 mgs of Prozac. I've read that long term untreated depression actually causes lesions in the brain and in males can affect the probability that their children will have depression. When I did go off, years ago, I did OK until I hit a stressful life situation and then I crashed like a lead balloon. You may be just fine Justin6378 since your dose is so low anyway but I would learn to watch for signs of a depression returning. It can be so subtle at first that you can easily ignore it and then you can get to the point where you're too depressed to take action.

The reason I came off the prozac is because I feel spaced out all the time and had lost control of things i was saying.
I was only on them for 4 weeks though and the side effects started about a week ago, I took my last dose yesterday.
It's hard to say when my depression started, but I was diagnosed 3 years ago.

Aimless,
Don't worry about my children, I couldn't even pick up a prostitute, let alone get someone to agree to getting her pregnant!

Sometimes the antidepressant is worse than the depression. This seems like one of those cases.

If you do happen to want to try again, there are others out there that mightn't be as bad. If the side effects are better than what you get when you're not taking it, then it's worth it; if not, no. Simple, right?

Good luck with this. I am surprised that the doctor said 20 mg. is the smallest dose - here in the States, Prozac is available in 10 mg. pills as well. I hope you're feeling better soon!

Often times, they make smaller pills than the lowest dose so the dose can be titrated properly. If the smallest pill were 20 mg, how would you give a dose of 30 mg without having to split pills?

Of course there are also the cases of toddlers and small children, as well as unusually small adults, needing smaller doses.

The doctor was very supprised that i was so badly effected and asked if i was on anything else 8O
which of course, i'm not.

Good to hear it justin

I think Prozac is pretty bad in all honesty very rarely it actually makes the patient happy only suffocates them I am just glad I refused that doctor offer over 4 years ago to take it, An aspie I knew last year was on a compound version of it and he was like a zombie in all honesty my aunt is the only person who has has positive effects from it I think sh is off them now though

Its good that you said no to the drugs and had the self awareness to realise what they were doing that I believe is the first stage of unleashing confidence awareness and control, If yo let anything get on top of yo you are not in control only a slave... a puppet to what you feel is general. I think everyone should realise their strengths and errors in order to forw\ard themselves, question their lives their actions are on the path to and then you will truly be enlightened

I have been on Prozac fluoxetine several times, I don't like it but it does help to calm emotions.
I often take 10mg either in the liquid form or one 20mg capsule evey other day, aspies can be senitive to medication.

Just remember that everyone will not have the same response to the same medication. Just because some people don't respond well to Prozac doesn't mean everyone will get the same bad effects.

I got off Prozac recently after almost 10 years @ 60mg daily. I can see clearly now. ;~> It's kind of funny though, because I remember the first time I took it, something way deep inside me said "YES!" - and it was the right thing to do at the time. But recently I had a feeling from that same deep place, "Time to get off it" so I tapered off easily. I was flying clear for a time; now I'm dealing with stressful events, not sure how that will go.

Good luck to you, I hope it turns out well for you in this very confusing issue.

20 mg is NOT the lowest dose for Prozac or SSRI's.
Doctors who KNOW about ASD's and co-morbidities and understand the potential hypersensitivites of people with ASD's may well suggest a reduction in dose and may also suggest you split your own pills.
Again, I suggest people read Temple Grandin's views on the issue.
She also talks about the appalling over-prescribing of SSRI's and other meds for kids on the spectrum and cautions against this. Again, I tend to agree with her.

managing co-morbids is a trial and error process. A "one solution fits all" approach to people on the spectrum is NOT possible.

I hope each person finds what is right for them, and can live happily and with some peace.

Good luck. I hope it will work out for you. I've never been on Prozac, or any antidepressant for that matter, so I have no experience, but I wanted to wish you well anyway.

Interesting you should say that - some years ago a partner of mine had wonderful memories of her first use of some prescribed antidepressant or other, and had initially thought it the answer to all her problems. But over time it became worse than useless, though she was scared to come off it and (as far as I know) never did. She was (arguably) the most disturbed soul I've ever known in my life. Seems to me that drugs prescribed in a "properly thought-out way" by qualified health professionals can sometimes end up looking very much like a case of amateur drug abuse - there's the initial euphoria as if the answer has been found at last, followed by a slow, downhill walk into suffering and ill-health.

I'm guessing 20mg is the lowest dosefor prozac in the UK, since we have to get our drugs via the NHS and they tend to choose what and what isn't available.
