In a weird way I'm feeling like an outsider here because I've never had problems reading expressions. Social cues, yes, but I can read emotion fine, and express it just as readily.

By no means am I boasting, but I'm wondering who else has never understood that aspect of autism?

Nothing wrong with feeling like an outsider amidst outsiders, eh?!

I usually at least notice facial expressions and can tell whether they are positive or negative, but the subtleties other people might know mostly go right past me.

For me i am unable to read body language or facial expressions. I've had to find a way around it. For that i use sound.
different tones pitch and pauses in sound help me to indicate in some ways a situation. I havent perfected it by no means. But it helps in a small way... Well, usually in letting me know i've gotten myself in an awkward moment.
If i wasnt so absorbed in my own head i could utilise this more. I really need to be concentrating outwardly to do this and that's hard!

I don't know if this is what you're really looking for, but I took an online test for being able to recognize familiar faces. Most people score over 80% and people with prosopagnosia (face blindness) usually score a 65% or lower. I scored 88%.

I almost unfailingly recognize actors/actresses on TV and in movies before my brother does. This is weird, because he has a lot of more NT-like characteristics in terms of being functional in everyday conversation, but I struggle with that.

From what I understand - face blindness or prosopagnosia as mentioned by masterdieff is a different thing to not being able to read facial expressions. The former is more a visual memory thing while the latter is an interpretation thing.

Funnily enough - I've got problems with the face blindness. But I think I'm pretty good with facial expressions. But yeah - I suck at reading social cues.

I took that face recognition test and got above average. Ofc i did, i analysed each face and found a unique feature to look for when i reappeared. My issue IRL is i don't care enough or am too focused on another task to notice or bother looking at someones face that much.

In terms of espressions, i recently took the eyes test during my assessment. It took me about 20 mins to get through 15 or so questions and the psycologist stopped the test there as it was clear there was an issue and painful to watch me try to systematically work out an answer. I actually got around average score though. I suggested i try to give a reply on the remaining ones within a few seconds and my score dropped dramatically.

So faces are fine and expressions i can work out systematically by analysing (and putting it in context with the situation and theri comunication), but it's definitely worked out in an intelectual way, not intuitive.

I don't think I have trouble reading expressions, it's just that I'm not sure how to act even if I know what the other person is thinking/feeling.

And yeah, face blindness is just the thing where you have trouble recognizing people.

Same here. I use sound, which is part of the reason why I do good with one on one conversations in quiet environments. But from what I understand the ability to do this is pretty rare with people with ASD. It does make me a rather good conversationalist, in the right environment.

Its not that I am face blind, that is not being able to recognize a persons face. I am blind to body language and facial expression. From what I understand though this is not the case with most, it is not necessarily blindness, as it is the ability to process correctly the non-spoken language, basically the ability to understand it and communicate back.

I scored 55% on that Facial Recognition test. I almost never recognize actors and I can't picture faces very well, especially when reading about people.

I read faces pretty well, I think. In fact, that's one of the things that makes me wonder if maybe my issue is actually ADHD (Inattentive Type) instead of AS. :?

I do sometimes have trouble recognizing people out of context, but I was always told that's normal, at least to a certain degree.

I would like to add that I think there might be a difference between being able to do well on a face reading quiz and applying it in real life. My 12-year-old son is AS, and likes to draw comics. One of his strong points is putting an appropriate facial expression on his characters. He's fantastic at it, and captures all kinds of subtle moods with little differences in the eyebrows or mouths. In real life he's not terrible at reading facial expressions, but not all that great either. But on some level, he must be pretty good at it, or he wouldn't be able to draw his characters so well.

I don't feel that I do, but I took an online quiz on a forum I used to be on and I did poorly compared to most of the other people. I still am not fully convinced that those people could really guess those feelings based on just looking at those faces, I was actually pretty stunned that my score was so much lower.

I'm pretty sure I don't have difficulty reading emotions. I'm actually pretty sensitive to people's moods, though I must rely on tone-of-voice and other cues more than facial expressions since I don't look at people's faces a whole lot.

I suck at remembering faces (once got introduced to the same girl three times and didn't remember who she was) but no, I don't have full blown prosopagnosia.
