I never talk unless I have to, and then I just say the minimum that I need to in order to get the point across. My whole life people have said that I was shy. So a few years ago I decided I was going to cure my shyness and joined this shyness group, but I immediately realized that those people were nothing like me. I don't feel too anxious or afraid to talk (at least not consciously). I just don't feel the need to talk. I can't be around people on a regular basis without someone making the same stupid joke I've heard my whole life, which is some variation of "You're too loud! Be quiet!" Hilarious.

But someone I've known for a while said that it never occurred to him that I had Asperger's because the other people he knows with it talk a lot, even too much. So I'm wondering if my silence really has anything to do with it.

By the way, I can be quite verbose when writing. It's like writing uses a totally different part of the brain or something.

I do my fair bit of talking on and off the Internet. If I have something to say, I'll say it. I talk more when I'm around my friends, than I do around my family members. I'm very quiet, when I'm with my family.

I talk to the people I talk to - mostly interviewing or lecturing

I used to be like that too, because I had nothing to say on top of being shy. Now I talk too much, but I have a lot to say.

Same here
I almost never talk
I was born in small and close community ( a Kibutz) and many people there told me that they have no idea how do i sound because they never heard me speak
But l absolutely love word, and sounds and been told i am quite gallanted at handling words (in Hebrew) and good at listening and at "getting" people
Like you, i do no have the urge to talk at all,
unless i'm with someone special to me,
Then, like many AS, i can talk a lot.
Writing doesn't involves sound,
sound is personal and is not to be shared with any one,
For me talking is like taking my cloths off
i like to do it very much,
but not with everyone , every time and every where.

I was a select mute from age 4 to about 14. I had a very quiet voice and only talk to my family and that was very little. I hardly talked at school. I would usually just talk when it was required.

Over the years I've talked a bit more. Struggled with social anxiety then when I found out about AS I worried about not being able to have conversations with people. Then I didn't care and became withdrawn. Then I got diagnosed with ADHD and my meds turn me into a chatterbox, but still in an AS way. Still, I have my moments when I'd rather not talk to people. Usually I'm spending time on a special interest.

The thing is, if I have something to say, I'll say it as well. But I rarely have something to say. It's not that there's nothing happening in my head. I just seem to tend to keep it there. I don't know.

That's an interesting analogy, and it makes sense to me. And in addition, I feel somewhat violated when I am forced to talk when I don't feel like it.

And I should say there is one person that I will talk excessively to, but only one and only when we're alone.

It's like you read my mind in certain parts your post, Zen. I don't speak, and that has bugged some of my acquaintances like hell over the years.

However, part of it for me is that I, first of all, do not have anything to say, and the second is that my words get out garbled in comparison to the way my brain wants to go quite a bit of the time (it is getting better, but is still not really worth putting up with around some people).

Around certain people who are involved with my special interest(s?), I turn into a chatterbox, though.

I'm not sure about how I am with writing, even though it is easier, I feel. For all I know, I could be going into muddle ramblings when it comes to posting, honestly (hope I'm not doing that, by the way).

But yea, you're definitely not the only one who doesn't feel a need to speak, if that offers any comfort.

I don't talk much usually if I am with a group of people I don't know much, because I know I will probably say something that will p**** them off ... I talk more if I am with people I am comfortable with, but even then I try to be cautious lol

I've been told many times to talk more tho ... thats because they don't know me yet lol.

I don't enjoy talking to most people. Most people don't have anything interesting to say and are quick to judge if I say the wrong thing. As a result, I avoid talking to most people. Some people bring up interesting subjects and appear to be fairly open-minded. I can sometimes be a complete chatterbox around this type of person.

I've wished a few times before that I could just not talk and somehow upload the information to another person's head so they'd 'know' what I mean without words.

I talk a lot. I talk about my thoughts, my interests, my imagination and random observations of everyday life. I notice that I talk even more if I forget to take a dose of medication. I talk so much that when I catch a cold and lose my voice, my parents playfully laugh and tease that they can finally get some peace and quiet. Oh, and my nickname in elementary school was "Chatterbox".

Yeah, I've always said that the part of my brain which translates thoughts to spoken words is broken. And maybe that's the reason for it. I just gave up trying. It wasn't a conscious decision though. I did talk when I was really young. I just stopped at some point.

I do agree that most people don't have anything interesting to talk about as well. XD

I am much like you, Zen, though through concerted effort, I have become much better at talking in the last couple of years. For me a lot of the problem is that I do not experience most of my thoughts as words or even as images. They are just sort of amorphous...non-things. It's difficult to turn them into words, and most of the time, I feel no need to do so.

I talk, but only with some people or when I must. When I go to shop and assistant asks me, I reply. When I'm at school, I must say something. But I don't seek conversations. I like to talk in Net, writing.
