So I decided to look up one of the people who bullied me in school on facebook. It turns out he is now a born-again uber-Christian, he's married and has a website and has written a book all about being a Christian, etc. It is so bizarre, because he is completely different to how I remember him! At first I was a bit depressed, because his life seems to have turned out brilliantly, but then I realised - despite all my difficulties, at least I'm not a brainwashed crazy person!

Sorry if this offends anyone with religous beliefs, but I was raised to be Christian, so it's kind of a pet peeve of mine..

With the allegation of brainwashing aside, the same thing happened in the life of the worst bully I ever had. He seems to have made a complete 180 and now spends much of his time trying to be helpful to other people.

I think its how they compensate for their guilt...

To convict another of being brain washed implies a clean mind by the adjudicator. My experience suggests that none of us have achieved such purity.

Interesting that brain washing cured him of bullying. Unless he is now a religious bully (accept my beliefs or else?).

Don't get me wrong, it's not because he has Christian beliefs. It's more to do with the fact that he has this website and has written a book about some crazy stuff that makes me think "brainwashed crazy person".

In my own case, it is very difficult for me to believe/accept any real change has actually come about ... but at least his bullying days have ended.

Maybe it's an aspie thing? I get a thought in my head and if I don't spit it out it consumes too many brain cycles. You invoked brain washing. I generated an idea. I couldn't keep it to myself.

Same here. Also, I don't really know if he has stopped bullying. He's a youth pastor now.

Wow. That's a big change. It would be interesting to see if he is still an alpha male bully wrapped in scripture (wolf in sheep's clothing?)

I have only really met three born again christians and the three of them were all judgemental jerks who used their christianity as a form of bullying like one waitress who blamed another waitresses child's cancer on her behavior. There was one who said I was alone because I am an athiest. The third said the reason the muslims live in such harsh environments is because they choose the wrong religion. I am sure there are truely good borm again christians but I have yet to meet one.

Your bully probably no longer bullies with violence or threats but with words and beliefs. He most likely just changed the way he hates on people.

If I could remember their last names I'd look mine up. As much as I think it's likely their journey into the world of drugs and violence has claimed their lives I'm afraid if I ever managed to find out what happened to them there's just as great chances they've got families who love them, good education, good careers and general respect from their old peers who used to play the roles of passive onlookers.

Although the one guy I do remember did become a career criminal. I found out about that when they did a segment on him on TV about how art was positively helping rehabilitate criminals, and they were holding a big prestigious art show of the prisoner's works to raise awareness with lots of nobs attending. Of course he had a big sob story about how he was 'learning to let go of that way of life through the healing power of art'. Two weeks later he was in the news again, they caught him running a major drug and extortion ring outside through his newly gained greater privileges he got from being such a model prisoner/artist. The incident that got him caught was him ordering someone on the outside brutally beaten up. To say I was unsurprised would be an understatement. Guy always was good at getting kind people to help protect him from the consequences of his actions so he could continue hurting others, ever since he broke another kid's arm at the age of 10.

Yes, and I have also seen that kind of position used to self-aggrandize while talking about oneself no longer being the bad guy of one's own past.

One of my own bullies was a pastor's son whose mother once thought I was absolutely horrible for once standing up to him ... but now I have no idea what he has been doing for these past 45 years.

You have a good point. Which is why I've come to associate brain-washing with extremeism (as in beliefs, practices or changes in behavior). One can recognize an extreme shift.

Being a born again christian is anything but a guarantee that things are going well or that he's really a good person. Here's a list of famous born again christians. Note the presence of Jeffery Dahmer, George W. Bush, and Charlie Sheen on this list.
