I've only be on this forum for a day and I am shocked by the amount of people that self diagnose and straight appear to desire having Aspergers. Why is that? Others that do seek a professional opinion end up saying things like "my doctor is an idiot" or "my doctor isn't experienced enough". I even saw a person suggest that an individual see new doctors until they find one that will agree with them.

It's easier for them to get services.

I never wanted a diagnosis of anything. I remember dreading going and getting tested as a kid. The only thing good about it is I missed a day of school. I wanted to miss for a different reason besides going and waiting to talk to experts at a clinic. It took hours, too, and was so boring. At that time, I wished I were just like the other kids, never spending time in any hospitals, never taking any tests to see if I could put pictures into their appropriate sequences, though the tests themselves weren't that boring. It was waiting around to take them. There was a group of kids there besides me and all of them got to go home before I did. I wondered why did it take so long to see me while all the others seemed to whisk in and whisk out.
I can distinctly remember the last time I was there. I was nine or ten years old.
Now, I don't mind it so much. When I was a kid, the last thing I wanted to hear was diagnosis or names of syndromes or conditions that meant I wasn't like other kids.

For me it was (as most things are) a matter of personal meaning, self understanding, a hook to hang some stuff on while I sort things out. I'm not seeking diagnosis.

Diagnosis is necessary for services. If there even are are any where you happen to be.

I don't think anyone desires a disorder, except perhaps hypochondriacs or something.

So does it bother you when you see some of the things I mentioned? People self diagnosing, disagreeing with doctors opinions and stuff like doctor hopping?

People are so naughty! I wish you were in charge, and then things would run properly!

People should try to be happy with themselves and do what it takes to achieve that goal of self satisfaction. That's the most important thing of all.

I'm shocked that you can so easily generalize a population in a single day,

I am not self diagnosed. But I could have been. I was misdiagnosed when I was a child with mental retardatin. my family new it was wrong. when I was 21 I was diagnosed with autistic disorder. If I did not get the right diagnsois then I would probably decided that it was somthign but that I am smart to the first diagnsois was wrong. There was a time when I was a child my hereing was suspected. but my hering was fine. lots of wrong ideas befor the right idea. I was a adult before the right idea hapened. that is probably what is hapening with a lot of people. it is only these last 10 years that knoledge about autism has become more known and understood. for many years this was not true. it makes perfect sence that there is a lot of adults out there who are not diagnosed but do have it. it must be difiuclt to be them I think. they do not need people like you to make it more dificult for them than it already is. Asperger syndroem is not always very obvious also. doctors do not always know about it still. my GP does not knwo much about autism. she could not make a diagnsois. my parents over the years have asked my GP many questions about autism and my GP has said that they do not knwo. at least my GP is honest. not all GP's are honest like how not all people are honest. If they do not know they might jsut decide some one has not got it. my partents know to talk to my psycologist or psyciatrist now. not all psycolgists and psyciatrists know about autism enough either. some are used to skizofrenic or depresed patians or others with mental helath problesm. with them it is more like gessing. if some one gets told no by these peopel or no by a GP or some one liek that I think they shoudl find some one else. some one with proper knoledge of autism. all kinds of autism.

I had doctors say different things about my son. Pervasive developmental delay, sensory processing disorder, and nothing (Yeah, right family doctor!). He is SOMETHING. I think aspergers is likely for him although he is harder for me to peg then my husband. My husband is 29 year old who feels like a child. He has struggled with MANY things from the time he was born and doesnt understand why he doesnt think like all of his other couterparts at work. We came across an aspie video quite by accident. It was amazing. My husband was like, I have that! We looked it up, he has nearly every trait. and has passed as aspie in every test. He will liekly get a dx when he gets insurence.

I didn't go around looking from doctor to doctor for someone who would diagnose me, but when I was diagnosed I was definitely happy. It was because I've lived all my life with issues no one was able to explain, and finally I had an explanation that made sense.

This. Though I never even heard of the term until my dad told me that my school counselor says I should get diagnosed for it. Probably would've gotten my diagnosis right away if I was a kid in this decade.

Though I understand how you feel about the current attitudes of diagnosing and such. Alot of people don't even realize that AS is far more complex than just a categorization for the intelligent or socially awkward.

Actually, I don't desire an Asperger's Diagnosis (it's one of the main reasons why I haven't gone - and don't intend to - to a doctor yet). The damn thing is incurable and has no advantages at all. Unfortunately, it seems to be the best way to explain how my mind works.

I want a diagnosis because I am already autistic, and I will likely need this information recorded for access to services.

I am not inclined to lend much credence to random people on the internet trying to convince me I am doing it wrong.

I'm not trying to insult you but you sound like the worst kind of self diagnoser. Watching a video? Taking an aspie test? Are these test legitimate or just random online tests developed by someone who is possibly not even a doctor? Many of the aspergers traits apply to other disorders and quite frankly just normal people. Specifically being socially awkward. Many people are socially awkward and there are varying reasons for this not just having aspergers.
