I spend most of my free time in my room, but it's not really decorated. I'm thinking I should though. I barely understood the concept of a room's atmosphere when I was younger, but it certainly has an effect on me now. Do you guys decorate your spaces in a way that encourages positive emotions, or do you just go with the flow?

I have a cloth Pink Floyd poster on the wall, my fraternity bid(s, long story), and my guitar. I lightly decorated my room in my apartment at college (I'm taking a break and working now) but definitely could have done a tiny bit better. The environment was a bit more aesthetically pleasing though. If I can force myself to be organized and tidy rather than throwing things on the floor, I'll be able to breathe more easily as well.

Anyways yeah, just seeing what you guys have done to decorate your bedroom, or haven't done, and how important a room's atmosphere is to you. Or if you have another room you're usually in, how you decorated it; for me it used to be the basement, where the TV and videogames were.

Female perspective: I don't know anything about how men decorate their bedrooms, but in my room, I have nice, light, cheerful colors, like purple. I live in New England, so having light colors gives the room a spring-like feel all year 'round. Plus, there's not much light in our house, so dark colors make the rooms look too dark. Consider where you live and what kind of lighting you have in your house. Or watch HGTV or DIY to get ideas, or go online. Home improvement stores like Lowe's or Home Depot can give you ideas, too.

I hate bright lights, daylight, overhead lights, and especially florescent lights.

I keep my rooms dim with at least one stained-glass lamp in each room. I like the bits of color and the soft pools of light that illuminate the room in a punctuated sort of way.

This can drive visitors crazy, but these rooms are for me.

It is best if to share your rooms (and life) with at least one cat.

Books! Can't have too many books.

Interesting, I keep my blinds shut at night and use a dim liglht, but I can't stand it when it's not sunny outside; I'm moving from Pittsburgh to LA before winter comes and depression sets in.

I watch HGTV now and then when my mom has it on. I feel like I have a good eye for atmosphere now, and I'll be on a low budget, and I'm not a DIY type, but I bet there are some cool ideas nonetheless.

My room is space attack. Hubble posters everywhere, planetarium always on, and corny sheets with rockets on them. Looks more like a 12 year olds room, but I like it.
But it is always ridiculously clean and organized and bright, which is why I can still stand it. It helps me think and breath properly... Normally I like really plain and simple decor though.

I painted my walls in my favourite light colours, spread out blankets, carpets and curtains in these colours and keep my cramped (because it's really small) place clean and tidy.

It might be the very cramped atmosphere that keeps any impression of bleakness away.

As for pleasant looking but practically useless decorations; I put up those objects I've been given as gifts that I'm okay with.

I do have a lot of books though. They are neatly organised by either looks, overall colour, my reading preferences or size which I feel comfortable with, but from what I gather, others cannot identify the systems I use to organise most of them and just think it looks "nice".

Anyway, just pointing out that an assortment of few matching colours that pop up in several different places can add much to a room's atmosphere.

Yes, books are a must! :D I also have a lot of things that people either gave me as gifts or belonged to my grandmother (she died a few years ago . I miss her so much ). But I do have a new bed! :D I bought pillows for it and I have new sheets. I also have pictures of flowers on the walls, some French pictures, and a decorative mirror. My room is very girly. You have to make your room your own.

My man cave has Pink Floyd posters that came with the 30th Anniversary Dark Side Of The Moon LP, a Dwight Schrute poster, A painting that my girlfriend did, and a pencil drawing that I did of her.

I mounted some old-timey-looking lamp fixtures made of brass pipes on each side of my workbench, which are functional but look cool, too. I had some replica 1890's carbon filament lamps in them for a while. Gave an interesting atmosphere to the room.

I also have this case of old and interesting vacuum tubes. There's more now, but my place is currently 150 miles away, so no picture.

Very nice! I just finished making a copper pipe towel rack for my guest bathroom :-)

Generally, my house is a nice mix of antique-y and modern with industrial accents. Sounds weird, but I like it; everything is all warm and cozy.

I've actually been doing some small renovations to my room this week. I mostly just go for efficiency and convenience. Everything else is secondary.

My room used to have posters of all of my favorite Tim Burton movies on every wall, but I took them down a couple of months ago when I was cleaning in preparation for family coming to visit.

Since I stupidly used tape to put them up instead of tacks, they're ruined now. My walls feel so empty now... But I feel like it's pointless to redecorate since I'm moving next summer.

Anyway, I have a huge, multi-layered desk filled with books and Alice in Wonderland toys where my computer sits, and my DVD collection is in my closet along with my shoes and my collection of magazine clippings about my favorite celebrities.

My room is lined with shelves, these shelves have remnants of past interests (special or otherwise).

I don't decorate my room at all. I've never thought of doing so. But I have two shelves of books, mostly science books, manga, and some of my favorite series (Artemis Fowl and Warriors (cat books)). That's all. I used to have stacks of books all over the floor, but my mom told me to clean those up. So now I have stacks of books on my drawers. :P

If I decorate my room it gets cluttered up. I like it all cluttered up. My clutter doesn't really make sense to others though it does to me.

my happy place is plastered with decorations. its walls are covered in embroidery, cross stitch, posters, newspaper clippings, maps and dried plants. the shelves surrounding me are full of books, dried plants, candles, toys, other crafty things ive made and other things. its the most colourful room in the house.
