During the 2005 racing season, for every lap that the 29 year old Jamie McMurray leads in his #42 Texaco/Havoline '05 Dodge Charger in the NEXTEL Cup Series, his sponsers will donate 42 dollars to the Autism Society if America for research.

Jamies neice is autistic, so this disorder hits close to home for him, and I am proud to run under the Dodge colors like him.

Hm... perhaps 42 really is the answer to life, the universe and everything!

But seriously. That is very cool. Glad to see he's donating to the ASA rather than some blatantly curebie group like CAN...

The $42 per lap was for the 2004 season, it's in an article on the ASA site. It was posted there back in April '04. It was nice of him to do it.

Hysterical. Autism is very dear to you, too. So you help Elliott out a lot with that effort. You have a niece as well, that has autism?

McMurray: Yes, I have a six-year old niece who has autism, so that's why it works well for me to do stuff with Elliott. Not only are we friends, but it works out well that we're going through the same thing.

We both have nieces that have autism, and it's cool to do stuff to try to help create awareness and try to find a cure for it.

Looks like he's doing a second year of it.

Just think of what he could accomplish if he painted a few puzzle pieces on the hood of his car. (I've never seen his car and don't usually watch the races, so maybe he already did...) The TV commentators would probably talk about it during the yellow flag laps.

I am not surprised at the success ASA has in linking with racecar drivers. The sport is full of autie-types. Two of my cousins have some traits and married stunt drivers for Joey Chitwood, one of the originals.
My hometown, Islip NY, had a race track and one of the first weekly demolition derbys which was like going to church for me!

My Uncle Bob was a real piece of work who joined WW2 "to have fun." He survived Casablanca, Anzio, D-Day and two other beach landings. Came home, opened a Chevy dealership and sold cars to race drivers at cost plus fifty bucks. Uncle Bob still drove his RV cross country when he passed away out in Arizona at age 65.

Many of my old friends from high school became pilots, another intense, exciting activity. I might have done that too but I lost my spleen in a sledding accident and couldn't join the service. So my friends became pilots and I wound up with eleven parrots.

Why did you get eleven parrots? Did you obtain the birds to keep you company? Did they talk? I couldn't become a pilot because I don't have 20/20 vision anymore.

That's great news, but he'll have trouble getting past Earnhardt Jr...

Jr. is good, but he'll have a hard time against the chargers this year.

Why NASCAR?

NASCAR sucks who the hell wants to watch a bunch stock cars go around in circles for hours besides a bunch of rednecks, and someone on the spectrum who loves cars?

I think they should have teamed up with the NFL since it would have helped raise more awareness, and besides Doug Flootie and Dan Marino both have children on the spectrum.

My two cents

Jman
You suprise me. I don't even know what NASCAR is. That does not mean I cannot be grateful that they are bringing awareness about autism. If it did not have an audience it would be non-existant. So it is reaching people.
I'm not interested in watching a bunch of football jocks running around battling with each others macho egos. BUT, if they were to promote awareness too, I would be grateful for that also.
People are diverse with a range of interests. Any group that can reach a wider audience that wishes to promote awareness is a good thing.
