After talking with my old uni lecturer (he is a cognitive neuropsychologist) about the brains of those with autism and adhd, he spoke about the eeg differences in the brains. He showed my a readout of an adhd brain vs a normal brain and wow the eeg was crazy all over the place in comparison!

This for some reason made me think of music therapy. I came across this music called "Binaural beats" which helps to induce certain brainwaves to help with relaxation and deep sleep.

I have troubles in that I never feel like I get a good night's sleep, no matter how many hours worth I get (and no I don't have sleep apnea, I have been tested).

So, I have been trying them out, and I do believe that they are making a slight difference for me!

There are a range of different ones on YouTube here:
http://www.youtube.com/results?search_q ... .0...1ac.1.

Has anyone else tried this? Or if not, try it and let me know how it goes - I am very curious!

I have listened to some of them while studying in the past year, but I haven't tried it while sleeping (was curious to try it, though, but never got around to it). I pretty much just listened to this sort of music because it is relaxing and not too distracting, but it is interesting to think there might be other good side effects for the brain as well. I must note that I found the pure versions of the binaural beat sounds kind of boring, so I mostly listened to ones that had other quiet music with them when I tried these (and also listened to regular quiet relaxation tracks as well). (On a related note (speaking of quiet relaxing music), here is a non-binaural beat relaxing track that I like and you might also like, for instance: link)

Thanks for the link, very pleasant sound :)

And yes, try the binaural beats for sleeping and see how it goes. They have both pure beats and ones with other relaxing sounds with it

The beats seem very annoying, but might be okay for sleeping.

I just turn on my Enya CD. Sometimes, that helps.

My husband has tried those. I think the effects on him were minimal. For him, that doesn't really surprise me.

I don't think I need to use them because I sleep like a log! They might actually be dangerous to me, lol. I might never wake up!

Ive just been trying binaural beats and my reactions are profound. I dont claim anything other than placebo, but ive noticed definite psychoactivity. I havent experienced the kind of psychic pandemonium wreaked by the "classical narcotics", but they are capable of inducing deep relaxation stimulation etc.

There is porbably more than a weak correlation with susceptibility to hypnosis. The mechanism at play may be related to the process of hypnosis. Perhaps this so called entrainment effect functions parallel to the hypnotic process and induces a proclivity toward certain brain patterns. I do feel as if my skulll becomes a resonance playground/echo chamber. Its as if the 2 waves exert tangible force

I've tried listening to binaural beats before just to see what kind of effects they would have. I never got anything out of them, other than being annoyed by the noise. I think they only work for neurotypicals.

EDIT: I got the wrong end of the stick.... apologies. It might be nice to clarify what you meant however

I think for me those fast beats would just increase my heart rate.
For me personally pure white noise helps put me to sleep fast and keeps me asleep.

Theyre not beats in that sense. I personally dont perceive beats. Theyre pure tones played in each ear. The idea is to entrain brain waves by frequency cancellation. Its pseudoscience at the moment BUT there was a studyt which showed that they are capable of reducing pre operation anxiety by 26%

I enjoy the sound of the waves on the sea. But I don't live at the coast so I have to make do with the sound of the traffic.

I might try out some of this though. Thanks.

This study suggests that offering binaural beat audio
before day case procedures might serve to bring about
anxiolysis in the majority of patients without impacting
adversely on postoperative functioning

Quote:
This study suggests that binaural beat audio has
the potential to produce anxiolysis in many preprocedural
hospital settings in which pharmacological sedation is
undesirable. The decrease in acute anxiety in our Audio
Group is in keeping with that reported by Wang
et al.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24294202
Quote:
Results showed that binaural beats, regardless of the presented frequency, can affect divergent but not convergent thinking. Individuals with low EBRs mostly benefitted from alpha binaural beat stimulation, while individuals with high EBRs were unaffected or even impaired by both alpha and gamma binaural beats. This suggests that binaural beats, and possibly other forms of cognitive entrainment, are not suited for a one-size-fits-all approach, and that individual cognitive-control systems need to be taken into account when studying cognitive enhancement methods.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9423966

Quote:
Presentation of beta-frequency binaural beats yielded more correct target detections and fewer false alarms than presentation of theta/delta frequency binaural beats. In addition, the beta-frequency beats were associated with less negative mood. Results suggest that the presentation of binaural auditory beats can affect psychomotor performance and mood. This technology may have applications for the control of attention and arousal and the enhancement of human performance.

:D Glad youve found a non pharmaceuitcal solution. Word of warning however. One study found increased depression and decreased immediate verbal memory following a binaural session.

I've tried binaural beats but they give me a headache. I usually fall asleep listening to relaxing music. I take my iPod Touch to bed with me and type in something like "relaxing music", "ambient music", "meditation music" or "yoga music" on Youtube and I'm asleep within minutes if not seconds. 8)
