I didn't think many forum owners took kindly to people advertising forums that are in direct competition to theirs.

I'm guessing that the WP folks don't see it as much of a competition lol
it's usually ok, as long as it's not a person's primary focus on our site. basically, if a person seems to be on WrongPlanet just to promote other forums or sites, that is a bit problematic. but we understand that WrongPlanet is not for everyone, and some members may prefer another site with different clientele/rules/moderators -
and that's ok (we'll even offer suggestions sometimes!).
in those cases where someone has a free forum or site they want to share, it's cool to provide the link here in most cases. of course, it gets problematic if the member starts spamming (a lot of links, not much contribution to WrongPlanet), or if they start advertising for paid services or sites.
but honestly, like Rascal77s said, WrongPlanet is massive so i don't think there is a big jealous worry here. and also we'd rather have happy members here and there than people feeling like they have to sneak off. there are lots of great resources and supports for people on the spectrum, we all benefit from being openminded.
