I was called a killer today due to having autism.

What is wrong with some people??
I was on my way back home from the gas station after getting some pop and I had a man that looks like he was in late 40's walk up to me and says "I see that you have a big autism awareness sticker on that back of your wheelchair do you have autism?" I am 100% Non Verbal. So I shake my head yes and then he asked me "If I was on my way to go kill some kids." I look up at him with a WTF look and shake my head no.

He then says in a yelling way.....

He did go on saying more but I was trying to get away from him. I put my Power wheelchair on max speed and got away from him fast as it will go. I look back that way a block away and he was just standing there looking my way. I know he seen me go in to the parking lot of the place I live at. I do live in a big place (10 floor high rise) so maybe he will never find out my apt #.

I do not know if he thanks he was just joking with me or not. I did not find it very funny at all. I go to that gas station a lot and do not what to run back in to him. There is a lot of people on bad drugs in this city maybe he is one of them.

He is the one that needs to be locked up not me.

I am not going to take my autism awareness sticker off my chair do to some nut job.

But do you think that I need to start having some one go to the gas station with me for now? I hate to do this but if I was to run back in to that nut job they can call 911 if they have to. or maybe yell at them.

When I lived in NY I was in an interracial relationship. On one occasion, while me and my honey was walking down the street, a red car passed by, the driver stuck his head out and shouted, "n****r!" A few months after that, me and my honey were walking down the street after dining in a restaurant. There was a slight downpour. We saw a car coming up the road then noticed the large pool of water in the street. Instinctively, we walked further away from the street just in case of a splash. Would you believe it? The bastard swung his car into the puddle which soaked us boat with street water!

Moral of these stories: the bastards are always around. We should feel free to conduct our business as usual because they are the ones with problems, not us.

Since you can't do so, I think you should take someone with you who could call 911 if something like that happens again.

The "person in question" in Connecticut was seriously disturbed for many reasons. Maybe he had Asperger's, maybe he didn't, but he had a LOT more wrong with him than that.

Why, why, WHY are so many people so quick to jump on the "autism = killer" bandwagon? Some aspects of society really are going to hell in a handbasket.

Yes, he does need to be locked up. If possible, I would report this to...someone. Maybe not the cops (I don't know if they'd take notice), but definitely someone you know and trust.

Even if it was a "joke", I still wouldn't take any chances. Anyone who thinks that is "funny" is also seriously f***ed up.

Someone said that to you whilst in a WHEELCHAIR? How many lone gunmen are on wheels?

This person is beyond stupid. They have no understanding of virtually anything. Keep your boundary strong dont let this get inside.

There are two types of people. One reacts with judgement, the other compassion. As a general rule, smarter people are the latter.

I would reply with "he also had brown hair, you have brown hair ergo you will be a killer". However this type of fool is often violent. In the UK i would call this in to the police, no action would be taken but its on record. I would also buy a spy pen..............record everything for little money. You need protection from abuse

Rightfully so. I only avoid letting onto having an ASD when buying gun-related stuff, and only temporarily. I won't let them define me.

If you have another person with you, it is legal in most states (Kansas is one) for another to physically come to your defense. Especially since you are in a wheelchair, people like that guy you ran into will likely argue about you with whoever is with you rather than addressing you directly.

That jackass couldn't be all that bad, he could read, after all!


This is the kind of exchange that direly needs to be captured with HD audio and video with a nice still photo of his face in the most vitriolic expression, captioned by what he said, and not only posted everywhere on the web but have billboards erected so all the guy's family, friends and associates can see him and what he said, and know how he really feels about others

If this just happened within 24 hours call the police and report it!

To me, that almost has a cartoonish quality in that I can't believe that people would behave like that still.

Here in Europe these things don't happen, I don't know why. The media here don't really blame autism for things as much as the American media seem to do. I would just not tell or show everyone that you are autistic because you seem to live in a country which gives a bad reputation to autism.

I don't understand how such a big country which such a big influence can have such stupid inhabitants like the one you described in your OP.

That's what I thought of the OP's experience. It's so ridiculous that actual human beings act like that.....going up to a random person in a wheelchair with an autism awareness sticker and yelling at him and calling him a killer.....it almost seems like a comic rendition of someone being a jackass....it seems made up (though I know it isn't). Wow.

I've had it up to here with the autism persecution. The boy getting attacked at Walmart is bad enough but this ranks as the worst case so far that I've heard of. I say don't let him get away with it. Anyone who takes his side against someone who's in a wheelchair is a complete idiot.

In almost any other country this man would not even be allowed to roam about freely. The US has possibly the lowest human forms of life on the entire planet. Semi-intelligent rocks are higher up on the food chain. Speaking of which some woman who brutally murdered her ex-boyfriend by shooting and stabbing him so many times the entire bathroom was soaked in his blood over a year ago is finally on trial, and I KNOW she'll be the next Casey Anthony and allowed to roam free.
