A person on Yahoo claimed that Im not autistic because I know who my family is (lol) and my pediatrician thinks that Im over-thinking it even tho my mom and tons of other people says Im autistic, too. It's like my pediatrician doesn't know that autism runs on a spectrum and not all Aspies are low-functioning. I practically stay in my house the entire year and have 1 close friend who I just met.

Why is Asperger's Syndrome so widely misunderstood? Because so many people draw conclusions based on incomplete and/or inaccurate evidence. They are ignorant, and do not feel motivated to correct this.

It's infuriating, isn't it? A criminal's Autism should NEVER even be mentioned unless it is directly related to the crime committed.

I have heard of one case in which a man with Asperger's would cause damage to objects and entities which caused noises that he couldn't cope with, but outside of exceptional cases like these, it should never be disclosed or mentioned.

It's worth remembering that Yahoo Answers is home to some of the most ignorant, stupid, and bigoted people on the Internet, and that's without counting the trolls.

The pediatrician was just some resident student or something my pediatrician hired. After doing some more research, I'm more shocked that my real pediatrician, not the resident student, would hire someone so unqualified for the job because he teaches at Cornell Medical School.

I told a co-worker today that I'm autistic. She laughed and said, "You're not autistic because you wouldn't know it." Huh? I told her I'm high functioning and am well aware of my social deficits, etc. She still insisted I'm not autistic, no doubt because I don't look like Rain Man. :wall:

That is exactly what someone on reddit and yahoo told me. They said that because I know I have anxiety problems, I must not be autistic because I know of my conditions. The amount of ignorance just baffles me. There they are on the internet that has the useful tool—google—yet they refuse to utilize it and live in ignorance

Yahoo isn't always the right place to look for answers. Usually dumb teenagers post on there who don't know how to empathise with people.

And yes, this is another reason why I hate having AS, it's so misunderstood. My AS is an invisible condition, but people don't understand that just because I seem normal and able to communicate, doesn't mean I still don't need support in other areas.

One of my old co workers made a rainman comment once to me. I told him to go get a ton of marbles I will show him rainman. He spent three days cleaning them up.

Most people are ignorant about Aspergers and Autism because they are not invested in it. If they have no pressing reason to research a subject then why would anyone spend hours on the internet? Someone with a family member with a condition (any condition) will try their best to find out all they can. But beyond that who wants to spend hours on end trawling the internet for answers to a problem that has no direct relevance to them.

I met a lovely girl with severe cerebral palsy at xmas, she had the mind of a baby and could barely control her body, yet she was so sweet I fell in love with her (in the platonic sense, nothing pervy) Yet despite asking her carer about her, I never went on the net to research her condition, I had no reason to. So how can we complain about people who don't know or care about us, if they decide not to do any research into us?

Its a shame, because life would be so much simpler for us if people understood, but unfortunately such is real life :(

I rank Yahoo comment pages as "not worth reading", so I wouldn't put any stock in what they say there. I don't know much about Reddit.

I feel the same about Yahoo. In my opinion Reddit is seen as a site with a more 'cutting edge' to it, most are there to be seen as cool and provocative. There are some interesting parts but most content is antagonistic.

Well put. I think that could be the answer to "why is (insert almost anything here) so widely misunderstood?"
