Can I take a sledgehammer to a car whose alarm is going off?

HOW CAN THIS BE ACCEPTABLE?!

How could it be that this horrid noise going off every so often like it's just some dude chilling out is just perfectly fine with everyone... no one seems to bat an eyelid... but I can't simply SMASH IT?!

I was just listening to a wonderful radio 4 afternoon drama, of which ones on Saturdays seem to be better than usual... and it went off in the last five minutes. Hey, who cares about alarms as long as society keeps capitalism rolling on (which in turn enabled fuckwits like this car's owner to buy such a car in the first place :D)?! Ironically the drama was about Nietzsche's will to power... and, I suppose, I should consider myself emasculated, being able to do f**k all when some random car intrudes upon my life like this!

You could do... but you'd have to live with the possible consequences of being charged with criminal damage and possibly have a big fine to pay as well as costs of repairing the damage.

I do sympathise though. When I was a student I lived briefly on a noisy housing estate. The next door neighbour woke everyone up in the street when he started his car and went to work every morning at around 6 am. This went on for several weeks. It sounded like he was driving a tank! One night I sneaked out in the dark with a large potato, intending to jam it onto the end of his exhaust pipe... then I realised why his car made so much noise... it didn't have an exhaust pipe! It must have rusted and fallen off. It was completely missing! So I let all his tyres down instead.

The following morning I got woken up at 6 am as usual when he started his car then a few moments later there was a lot of cursing and shouting. :P He got his car fixed a couple of days later with a new exhaust pipe.

It'd be better to disconnect the siren &/or the battery vs. smash the car which won't turn the siren off.

I don't know if you know this but if a car alarm is going off for an excessive amount of time. It is legal for a cop to smash your driver side window, pop the hood and disconnect your battery.

The thing is. Nobody react to car alarms anymore because there are so many false alarms. They've pretty much fallen victim to the crywolf syndrome.

They now have these new silent car alarms now. When the alarm goes off. Instead of making an annoying noise. it now beep a pager on you or send a text to your phone.

There are higher end cars that have ultra sensitive alarms in my neighborhood. I swear if a fly lands on one, the alarm goes off.

It's BS, and no one cares.

*hands you a sleg hammer*

I feel your pain.

The exhaust note on a couple of my old cars used to set sensitive car alarms off. I thought it was funny. :P

About 3 am one morning, I tried to talk a cop into shooting through the front of the car into the battery to kill the alarm.

He refused to do so.

If he shoots anything there's a lot of paperwork to do.

It really ought to count as disturbing the peace to allow your car alarm to go off forever, though. You should go out there and shut it off.

Get his license plate number, find out who the car belongs to, file a criminal complaint for disturbing the peace.

Car alarms are adjustable so they don't go off falsely, and someone with a car alarm should be diligent in responding and subsequently disarming it. Those who do not are inflicting harm on those forced to listen to it.

And it's not just an annoyance, either. If you keep your neighbors up so they're sleep-deprived when they try to drive to work the next day, they may very well go to sleep behind the wheel. That's a major hazard.

Cops are used to breaking up noisy parties, right? They can't be too opposed to telling somebody to shut their car alarm off at 3 a.m. so their neighbors can sleep.

Research your city/county/regional bylaws regarding noise and their sources and document the incidents as well as the duration of them. Perhaps first you should try the traditional way of settling automotive disputes and write an anonymous letter about the your displeasure and leave it under the windshield wiper before you get the law enforcement involved.

I hate car alarms. They're annoying and sometimes painful, and no one even pays attention when car alarms go off anyway.

I'd like to have the ability to set your own car alarm. If I had a car whose alarm I could set I'd set mine so that if it went off it would randomly choose songs like Turkey In The Straw or Hail To The Chief. I think that would actually get people to come.

I would not advocate that anybody break the law -- but if you do, and get caught, I will contribute to your legal defense fund.

One of my special Aspie powers is to zone in to car alarms, and inside the noise I have synesthesia and do quantum physics......

Ok, so I'm totally, totally joking. :bounce: Yeah, it's annoying, but for ANY human, NT or Aspie. In other words it's not an Aspie thing at all! No one except for the deaf can stand this. So if it happens and it lasts for more than 10 minutes, I just call the police and calmly explain, "it's disturbing the peace," and very quickly it's taken care of.
