What Uta Frith said in the documentary is I think very important, and more people should take it into account. You see it on here quite a bit, people wondering if certain personality traits put them on the spectrum.

I think she said something along the lines of:

"It's easy to confuse autistic-like traits with autism, so if you think you might be a little bit autistic, you're very probably are not".

Fast forward to 51.10

Interesting because I heard Simon Baron Cohen said that self diagnosis is usually valid. Do the statements contradict each other? Or is it, if you think you just are a little bit autistic you're probably not, but if you think you're autistic you probably are? I don't understand.

I bet this is a case of everyone having an opinion. It's not really a science, is it.

Yes, I thought that was interesting too. What Simon Baron Cohen says is that a person will probably be diagnosed with autism if their autistic traits are impeding their life. If they are bullied because of it or develop depression because of bad social skills.

This is something I have wondered about myself. I've never bothered trying to get a diagnosis because I am employed and live on my own, but I suffer from depression and I have terrible social problems. I may be autistic, or I may not be. I don't know. Maybe I have social anxiety issues, but then I have alot of autistic traits. I guess only a psychologist can answer my questions, but I don't know if they would bother with me because I am independant and able to look after myself. I know that I am not going to ever get married or be in a romantic relationship. It seems impossible for me with my levels of social skills.

Interesting, I'll listen to the whole thing when I get home from work.

I thought that bit was bollocks. The rest of the show was excellent.

She is saying if you think you have autistic type traits, but they aren't keeping you from having a normal life, then it's likely not autism.

OTOH, If you see the diagnostic criteria for AS/HFA and say to yourself: "Oh. My. God. THAT EXPLAINS WHY MY LIFE HAS BEEN SUCH A CLUSTER-F__K!! !! 8O

Then your self diagnosis is probably correct.

It's a science that is very susceptible to being biased by opinion. :D

I have not seen the documentary but just from the comments on this thread it could be because everyone, even NT's, struggle with little bits of what people on the Spectrum struggle with. The difference is the severity and amounts that Spectrumites struggle. So if you might get annoyed by a sound every now and then or if you might be awkward socially every once in a blue moon you don't have Autism. If you struggle all day every day, and your life is impaired from it than that is a very different story.

this is where I was and it caused me to get an official diagnosis

I know a lot of people who are a little bit autistic, but they are not autistic, and they don't understand autism.
