What does it mean when someone winks at you?

I've wondered as well. I think it means someone's joking.

There was that movie... i robot with Will Smith where they said it means 'trust me' but I completely don't get that when someone winks at me. It seems like they are up to something or have some sort of ill will. But, of course, I could be mistaken.

Depending on the context, a wink could mean a joke, or it could also indicate attraction/interest.

They are "up to something" but the wink implies that they are not going to do it to you....you are on the correct side of the wink.If they are winking at someone else and you catch them....watch out.....you are on the wrong side of the wink and they are either going to do a "practical joke" or tease you or lie to you.

I recently learned that dogs do some thing similar to this when they interact. It's called the "play bow"...the lower the front of their body and keep their rear end elivated, often wagging.......This is supposed to let the person/dog,on the other end of the bow.........."Whatever I do next is not to be taken seriously....I am only joking or play acting".....they can then proceed to do some thing "hostile" and the "other" will know that it is not meant as a real attack.............

I would prefer people do this before teasing, being sarcastic......it would be much more noticeable then a wink.

Thanks Krex!
I totally agree with you about the dog and their play-bows. It's so obvious that they intend to play when they do that. If only people were as easy to read. :-)

I hate it when people wink. It can mean so many things and I can never understand which it means lol. Ambiguity annoys me no end.

Usually it means "Ya know what I mean?". It's an act of suggestion.

As a child I had a phobia of being winked at. I'm still not keen...

I think winking has gone out of fashion now (or something like that), I haven't seen someone wink in a along time.

I feel like winking when I'm in an overly joyful, mischievous mood. I almost never do it though, I'm not good at it. I probably just have "a glint in the eye" and a mischievous smile on my face at such times.
