I hear everything, I mean everything! And everything annoys me! People who smack, snorting their runny noses, clicking with their pens, tapping with feet, loud breathing, snoring, etc etc. Aaaaaaah! Even thinking about it gets me annoyed! Do you relate?
I always sleep with earplugs, or else I won't get sleep at all, when I'm watching tv and there is noise outside, I close the window. My hubbie smacks with his mouth closed, also verrry annoying. How do you cope? Can you block it?

My dad and my brothers jaw always clicks as they are eating. When I was living at home I didn't cope well at all. I would attack my brother most meal times. As an adult I tend to eat alone.

Me too. Can't really block it other than earplugs, earphones or putting fingers in ears. Think quite a few people experience this, some people call it misophonia.

Sensory integration therapy (a form of occupational therapy) can help with that.

I haven't started it yet but will soon. The way I deal with noises now are covering my ears, leaving, or having meltdowns. Not very effective. *sigh*

Pick up some audiophile gear. Listen to your music for posterity, not simply comprehension. I suggest Grado Labs SR60 headphones or Monoprice 8320 earbuds if you need a nice deal for the cash, but otherwise GO CRAZY. I can't afford vinyl but you should buy some.

You're welcome I guess. :) I was really surprised to find out that it was 'a thing', and that it wasn't just me.

I put on a set of headphones or earbuds and crank some music. In more extreme cases, I'll go straight for noise generator software. Brown noise is my favorite.

Bianurality is what you're referring to regarding "brown noise", but I think we're talking about a lot of definite, acute stimuli which need dampening. I would leave the music choices up to the OP but I believe the theory communicated through downtempo or ambient music might do the most in terms of re-training the responses to a full house or a long day. Open-backed headphones are quite safe in terms of conditions like tinnitus, earbuds less so; in choosing headphones I look for extreme fidelity and minimal air movement/compression. In-ear earbuds should be chosen very carefully as they rest in the ear canal; all audio equipment should be chosen with respect to what you want to play over it.

I agree with Noetic, otherwise I can't do anything...

That makes it sound like I'm forcing you to agree.

in public: good headphones with MP3 player

at home: tell them to stop eating loudly/making noise

with people snoring/sleep sounds: throw something at them, snoring is my enemy, anyone moving or making noise while asleep drives me absolutely insane, sooo unless they want stuff thrown at them they put up with my radio.

I do this all the time, particularly in crowds and noisy situations.
In terms of coping with noise, for me it's complex. For example, I have no problem with heavy machinery etc., and I will quite happily listen to music that most NTs can't handle (death metal, anyone?), but lights buzzing, taps dripping, people talking too loud, alarm clocks, school bells are intolerable. I suppose I must process sound differently, rather than just being unusually sensitive.
