Hey guys.

I'm wondering if you notice that most people speak more fluently than you? I have normal speech but sometimes it takes me an extra half second to reply in a conversation and I often forget words for things. For example is if meant to say 'I put the plate in the sink' I might say 'I put the plate in the bucket, bowl, box'. I know people do that sometimes anyway but I do that fairly frequently. I keep calling the dish washer a washing machine for dishes lol. I don't have the same problem when I type or speaking.

Yeah, I get that. No idea why. I can type normally.

I'm more eloquent than some people in some ways.

I'm less eloquent than some people in other ways.

Overall, I don't believe I speak as well as I should speak.

Yes, almost everyone who speaks does do more eloquently than me. :)

I probably would have said, "sink" and pointed to the sink. Maybe added "dish" if it was needed.

Most of the time, I get away with it if I smile. :)

I usually don't mess up words, but I often talk softly and either mumble or slur so I am told.

I prefer to let my actions speak for themselves.

I take a little longer to make my point when speaking. I do articulate myself different than most ordering at fast food restaurants and such.

In certain situations I can be incredibly eloquent. Most situations, though, I tend to do the same with regards to forgetting words, having trouble with word finding, etc. Sometimes I stop in the middle of a sentence because my brain hasn't caught up, or something, (that's how it feels) and people will try to finish for me which I find very frustrating and then I get more flustered and am less likely to find the word I want.

I do notice other people do it, a little, but I'm not sure if it's less than I do or not.

Yes, they do. It's as if their words naturally flowed out of their mouths without actually trying to. When I speak I have to actually consciously try to form a sentence, which makes me speak rather slowly and pause sometimes. I do the same in my first language, too. So it's not an ESL problem.

when i'm in a situation i've foreseen or planned, i can generally speak pretty clearly/crisply if i "rehearsed" enough.

i've met a few others whom i doubt are ASDish who speak slowly like i do, so i don't felt totally alien. most of the time, my girlfriend speaks very eloquently and clearly, as though her entire day was memorized by heart and rehearsed. she's like my foil in that aspect.

in mundane "pass me the salt" kinds of interactions with my closer family, i find gestures and monosyllablic speech is enough.

Absolutely, although it depends a lot on how nervous I am. The more nervous I am, the more fragmented and stilted my speech becomes. I often feel like I sound like someone who learned English as a second language. The sad thing is, I don't even have another language to fall back on, not that I'd expect people around here to speak languages other than English, but if I were fluent in French, at least I could lie and say that it was my first language, thus excusing my difficulties with English.

Sometimes I will take extra time to respond because I heard someone, but my brain didn't register it. After a delay in processing, I will respond.

Sometimes, I have walked by people in public with my husband and he will say, "Aren't you going to say hi to so-and-so? They said hello to you!" And I didn't even hear the person because I was lost in my own thoughts! I wonder how many times I have walked by someone who said hello but I didn't even know and no one was there to point it out. That would definitely come across as rude!

I also forget words, or mix them up. If I am reading something and someone starts talking to me, I might respond using the last words I read. My family finds it very funny when I mess up words and sayings. I do this more in front of family than anywhere else. Thank goodness. It would be extremely embarrassing if I did that in public too often.

I am a lot more accurate in my speech than the average individual due to the fact that I've learned & studied a variety of languages, including legalese, and so I rarely make mistakes of false-labelling any objects.

Communicating with people can be frustrating sometimes for me.
