As someone with Aspergers, one of my biggest problems is simply caring about things I have little to no interest in. This has caused big problems during school, as I don't tend to care about a certain subject, in this case maths, which has lead to poor scores and basically almost failing the class. I've tried to help this problem, and I'm trying my best, but it's really hard.

This problem of mine only gets worse when it comes to homework. For one, homework really stresses me out. Of course, I procrastinate to the point where it's the last minute and I have to rush the homework. Right now, I have to read an entire novel before school starts again and I'm having a really hard time trying to get into it and get it done. I really can't help it, and I really do try to stop procrastinating so much, but it's hard for me. :(

I'm wondering if anyone else here has similar issues with procrastinating? Do you guys have experiences like these? I'm honestly really curious to know.

All the time for a lot of things. Even when it comes to making phone calls I'll procrastinate on that. Doesn't any easier with time.

Ooh, I should post something about this...
Erm, maybe not...
Hmm, but I might have something useful to say...
Nah, what could I possibly add...
Maybe I'll have another coffee first...
Pace, pace, pace; mutter, mutter, mutter...
Yes, I'll definitely post something...
Nah, what would be the point of that...
Yup, I'll begin my post with "....."...
Nah, that sound's stupid, how about "....."...
Edit, preview, edit, preview, edit, preview...
...etc...

No, never! Not me!

Actually, I procrastinate a lot. It's usually for one of two reasons. I'm either anxious about completing a task, or I haven't yet decided how I should accomplish it.

For instance, making a particular phone call may make me anxious, so I put it off because even thinking about it upsets me. I need to wait until I'm ready to do it. If I need to write a paper for school, I may procrastinate because I haven't yet figured out what I want to write about, or how I'm going to structure it. So I put it off until I can work it out in my mind. Writing papers also makes me anxious, so I'm usually putting it off for both reasons.

In order to overcome the anxiety type of procrastination, I just try to get myself to do whatever it is right away. The anxiety can build over time so I just force myself to start the task as soon as possible. It definitely works for me.

The other type of procrastination isn't as easy to solve. If I haven't figured out the best strategy for doing something, I just can't do it. So those types of tasks are often put off until I've had enough time to solve the problem mentally.

I do have trouble doing things that don't interest me. Not because I procrastinate, but because if I try to study something boring or concentrate on it, I either cannot focus, or I'm so bored that I begin to fall asleep.

It sounds to me like your issue with doing homework is the first type of procrastination. You have too much anxiety associated with it, so you put it off to avoid the feelings of anxiety. It may help for you to just start it right away. That way all of that anxiety can't snowball, and you'll have more time to do it. I find that it's hard initially, but after awhile the anxiety diminishes, and I feel better having more time to complete my work.

I've always been really bad for this, but recently I have been trying to get stuff done as quickly as possible. As soon as I wake up I do everything I need to do for the day, that way for the rest of the day all I have to worry about is basic stuff like eating. If I don't do this the thoughts of what I need to do are constantly in my head and creates a lot of stress.

Me. I think I do anyway. Let me take some time to think about it and I'll get back to you.

Hey! Someone already used this line! Now I'm going to have to come up with something else - darn.

Always, especially with something I have little to no interest in doing and/or do not desire to do. I, like most others wait till the last second to get something done.

I would quit procrastinating but I keep putting it off. 8)

I procrastinate but for me I think it's due to anxiety and perfectionism. I'm so afraid of doing things wrong that I avoid doing them.

I definitely need a "due" date. If I ever got pregnant and there was no "due" date, I'd probably be pregnant forever, cause I'd never think the bun was done.

^^Oh yes, for sure. When I got into a job that used to need "project management", the boss would always ask "how long do you think this project will take?". Eh? I'm a perfectionist and a procrastinator - with my indecision and tinkering, I can keep a project alive until the day I retire.
"Finished"? Don't know the meaning of the word - I barely understand "Started".

Here's a little trick that someone on another autism forum told me...

Got a load of different things to do? Can't decide where to start? Making lists and deciding priorities just becomes yet another thing to procrastinate about? Guess most folks on this thread go through all that.

Don't make a list - make one of those spinner things with a cocktail stick down the middle, like some board games use. Spin the disk to let fate choose which task to do right now. (or roll a dice, pin your tasks to a wall and throw a dart, write a randomising code script; whatever, so long as it is random.)

Don't argue with it, don't question whether that really is the best thing to do first - the decision is now out of your hands. Just do it.

Seriously - it sounds trite, but I'm finding that it really works. I've usually got a couple of things done before I would even have stopped procrastinating or re-arranging my lists previously.

I procrastinate on schoolwork somewhat, because I get distracted by the Internet and it's hard to motivate myself to work. But I never let it go too far.

I procrastinate on getting stuff done, namely things that will take a year or two of dedication and constant strain on my intellect/creativity.

That's just me though.
