I've been like this forever, but even more fanatic about it when younger. Whenever I eat a piece of food I must inspect it to make sure it has zero blemishes, then remove them if so. Likewise, I -have- to survey every fork, spoon, knife, glass, etc, to make sure it has zero marks and is clean. Do any of you have this problem?

Yeah. It sounds like you might be 100% vigilant about that, while I'm maybe 90%, but yeah, I check out my food, silverware, glasses, etc. before using them. Fruit gives me a hard time, because it's hard to tell if it's okay or not...I hate having to go through a bunch of fruit at a store to find some that doesn't look weird.

Also (maybe related?) I like having a lot of light when I eat. For some reason that I can't really put into words, it makes me uncomfortable eating if I can't see my food. My dad was like that too. My mom says she would be trying to do a romantic dinner or something, and he'd need to turn on the lights full blast before eating :D

I do this. I have to check my food hasn't got discoloured on one side, or is a bit different or something. I always check knives and forks too, and glasses and plates. Sometimes I think they're not clean even when they've been washed. I almost always use the same forks/ spoons/ glasses.

I'm the same. Most of the time I prefer the curtains shut and the light off. But whenever I get food I have to switch the light on to eat it. I only realised when I read your post just then, I'd never thought about it before. :D

Yes, I do the same. I have to check everything before eating.

Also, when someone outside my family gives me a candy or food, I sniff on the piece of food and check its smell :)

I do that sometimes too. Also, I think I can tell whether I would like the taste of something by the way it smells. I guess this is impossible though. That's why I never eat bananas. :D

I've got to have a light on too. No way I'm gonna eat something without being able to perfectly see it and all its details. I also have problems eating around other people. Generally, people can be quite disgusting in their eating habits.. and being unable to filter out the sound of the food squishing around in their mouths drives me nuts.

I've always hated hearing people eat. Even when I can't hear them eating, just seeing them chewing makes me feel sick.

I dont like to eat around people...dont like to see their food and self-concious about my own chewing(why is this considered a social activity?I only like to eat watching TV or reading....I dont like to talk and eat at the same time...yuck for eating and dating.)

I dont like a lot of light EVER,so eating is no different.I check veggies and fruit for bugs but that is about it...I eat a lot of chinese food and the sauce covers up any "bad spots" so I try and not think about it.I do have to check it for onions and mushrooms....only like very small, well cooked onions(no crunch allowed)and NO fungus for me.Somethings should just not crunch....why must you people add celery to my Tuna salad...how will I know it is not a bone crunching?(Actually I am on a Tuna ban,now.....fish are just polution sponges and cant stand "fishy smell".....weird how tastes change.I used to like it.

I dont freak out about germs to much...I think some small dose of them is healthy and will "innoculate us to illness" but I will wipe off any silverware with "spots". and wont use one with dried food.(most times it has been sterilized, even if it doesnt look clean.)

Yes....I always do the smeel test before trying anything new.My family always made fun of me for this but I can smeel some "chemical" things that always taste bitter and toxic to me.I used to not be able to eat canned soup because I could "taste" the metal....my taste buds have either mellowed from smoking and age or the cans are different then 10 years ago, because they dont taste to bad to me recently.

I would like fruit more if it didnt taste so "chemical"...that taste does not wash off and most fruit has very liittle "fruit" taste now adays...so much for genetic modification. We now have some really good looking things that taste like cardboard and chemicals.

Now for something unrelated to the topic:

I'm not sure if this is aspergers related, but I know it's linked to autism. I've always had what I've only heard been called a 'nervous twitch'. I don't like that term though. Regardless, I'll get fixated on something trivial like.. popping my neck. I'll HAVE to do it a million times all day. My mind essentially forces it. It can manifest in differant ways. For instance, I also have to do my mouse into the bottom left corner of my screen every so often whenever it hits. Anyone else experience something similar?

The thing with your neck could be a form of stimming? I'm not sure though, but I do strange things like that a lot too. I click my tongue all the time and blink a lot more than I need to.
I also do things with the mouse as well. I have to highlight text all the time and scroll right to the top/bottom of a page. Sometimes I have to click links and then back again etc. Maybe it is an AS thing. :?

No; as long as there is not something obviously wrong with the food I just shut up and tuck in. I'm like that, me.

The only thing I have to inspect is those prepackaged crackers with cheese or peanut butter. Once I took some of those apart just like you do Oreos for the fun of it and there was a tiny little worm crawling across the cheese spread. :( So ever since then I don't trust those crackers.

I smell dishes. I smell my plate, my cup, everything before putting food on it. I also inspect the food but the smelling thing is more noticable to others. I can't stand the smell of dish soap and I can detect even the slightest hint of it so I usually smell a glass then rinse it out multiple times before I use it. I even sniff pans before I cook with them. My family thinks my sniffing is *cute*

I'm like that too! And I too just like reading or watching something while I'm eating. For me it's not so much the sounds as it is the smells of people eating, combined with just feeling their presence. I don't like restaurants much because of that. I'd normally rather order out (or just eat at home).

Krex, I know what you mean about the metallic taste of a can, although thankfully (I guess) it's usually not overpowering for me. Plus I don't think I notice it as much anymore.

that was me as a child- I wouldn't eat anything if I thought someone had toched it, I checked for unusal colorsand smells, I was really obsessive. I still do that on occasion but for the most part I don't anymore, now its a rare thing- I think being in the military cured me of that osession to a degree, as all the food is suspect.
