Making good money, in NT World
What are chances of making good money? You try to get a job as manager but the NTs have more communication skills then you, you try to be a senior administrator but the NTs have more cognitive, concentration and speed then you.
What is left, to be an entrepreneur, to find a way to make money? Or said in a better way, to convert some other resource into money. Does the average NT do this better.
When someone finds out the aswer, please let me know.
Luckily, when I do make money, I make a tonne. Just need to figure out how to sustain a career and the relationships that come with it.
Just a freelancer musician/artist/writer for now. I can usually dazzle with my aspie skills, but find it hard to back it up in a consistent, reliable way. My mind just doesn't work like an assembly line.
Like I said before, let me know the secret!
HUH?
HUH? I have a larger vocabulary, and now am more cynical, etc... I have some REAL communication skills. The "body language" claims are GARBAGE! Just yesterday I read some more claims that are certainly not true of me. Some had to do with lying. That sayd that either they aren't good with reading the language, or it is worthless! If they COULD read the language, and it was worthwhile, few would get cheated, etc... ALSO, the "lie detectors" and "voice stress analyzers" wouldn't exist!
WOW! I NEVER have this problem around computers. Sometimes IDIOTS ask me about a problem just as I find out/hear about it, and have MEETINGS! NOTHING is done/determined, and I get it fixed sometimes SECONDS within getting back, even with NO added ideas!
Handling PEOPLE is harder for AS people, but even NTs are FAR from perfect!
One person I spoke with here has a company with a number of employees, and that person makes a lot more than I do. What I make is still respectable! Some FAMILIES struggle to earn what I do. I spoke with a couple others that make a fair amount more than I do. So even some HERE do pretty well.
Steve
Right now, I work as a rank-and-file programmer. No supervising, and definitely no entrepreneurship involved. But everybody likes my work, both my supervisors and the users for whom I'm writing the program. So in a nutshell, it is possible for an aspie to make money in the NT world.
HEY! SAME HERE!
HEY! SAME HERE!
this will soon be my job... and it's perfect for me.
I think aspies can actually make much better entrepreneurs with our specialized interests, passion, drive, and the ability to consistantly think and act outside the box. I know I'm not afraid to do things unconventionally or to take risks in many ways NTs could not and even shake their heads at, but that I know will be much more satisfying for me.
I tried the management/professional route, made it there, and was continually frustrated and highly stressed just dealing with people, office politics, corporate-type mindset, etc. I knew it was not what I wanted for the rest of my life.
I'm working on more entrepreneur type projects now, starting my own business ventures, working from home. It's kinda scary financially at the moment, but I know if I stick with it, I can make it work while doing things I enjoy. If I can even just make enough to pay the bills, I'll be much happier and much more satisfied working for myself than I'd ever be in an office.
Though working for yourself has even greater money-making potential than working for someone else if you can channel your energies and talents in the right way. You just have to also understand business and marketing in today's environment, but aspies can be driven enough in their area to make it work and work well!
I do well in the technical world. I did manage for twelve years and they were bucking for me to move up, but I hate managing. I hate working with people period. Money will NOT make you happy. I was miserable and tired all the time as a manager even though I had great employees. I couldn't stand it. I hated every day of my work life during those twelve years. You have to balance that. As a senior person in the technical world, I make as much as I did when I was a manager without those headaches. Be smart when you pick a career. Pick the best paying job you can in what you are interested in. Do not get pressured by what society expects because they know nothing about people like us. And remember this, at least half, that's right half, of NTs HATE their jobs. I'm not talking dislike. I'm talking HATE. They are miserable at work. Be careful. Choose wisely. Go to a career center and get an aptitude test and take it seriously. For us it is critical that we do what we like and are good at doing. It will make a world of difference in your life. My job is 99.5% alone. I rarely deal with people. That is priceless to me. My interest is writing, my work is a type of writing that is easy for me and well paid. That is priceless to me. So find out what suits you and pursue it with everything inside you. You do not have to be dependent. There are all kinds of jobs in the world and one will suit you as you are. Not all jobs are social or even reward that. That is such a line of crap. I don't know who tells you all this stuff but they are full of it up to their eyeballs. I work for a huge corporation (400,000 employees) and in my dept they do not reward social behavior, you get fired for it. You could hear a pin drop in all the places I work. If you laugh, it is noticed and commented upon. Social people hate it, but it is Aspie paradise. So don't listen to the nonsense of social idiots who want you to think the only way to succeed is by being social like them. Therapists and Educators are social by their very natures. That's why they are in those jobs. What they know about us is NIL. Nada. Niente. They might as well be shooting in the dark. Take care of yourself. Forget them. They are not you. They know nothing about you. Listen only to people who are like you and who made it. The rest are blabbing when they know nothing. You'll meet many of those. Avoid them. They are poison to us.
That's the best advice I can give you. I wish you all well. Remember, you are not all like me and many not, find your own way and your own mentor. Pay attention. Do well. Save yourself.

I have been working as a programmer for the last few years (LAMP web apps mainly if anyone cares) and have worked at a few different places in that time. One thing I notice is that I do much more work then alot of my coworkers and can grasp some things that are much above the knowledge of others that are payed way more then me. Those other programmers that make more then me seem to be very vocal and really let the people that matter know what they have done or can do. I just work so much and am too busy every day to really ever speak to those people that control my pay, I work my butt off all day long with no break usually. If I take lunch I eat at the desk. I am starting to think that no one really notices this though, well atleast not the ones that control the pay.
This extra work has never helped me to be recognized for my talents nor helped me to get any higher pay. I think that my poor communication skills are making it so that others aren't aware of just how much work i've done or just how much I actually understand. Oh and another thing about working in this field as an obsessive type of person is that I am always taken advantage of by everyone, I always end up doing way more then my job title should responsible for. Even though I think i'm not recognized for my talents, for some reason I am always the "go to" guy. If no one else can figure it out lets hand it to Tim. This handing over of work is usually from other coworkers that are at about the same level as me in the whole corporate hiearchy so this extra work is more then likely not noticed by the upper guys.
I never turn this stuff down either because with this personality. I'm always up for any challenge and think I can do anything. This turns into UBER stress at the job since I take on way more then I can really handle and stay sane at the same time.
What I am trying to say is that maybe the technical field really isn't the best place for an aspie to work.
I have actually started to get back into TIG welding and want to do that for my next job. Sit at a bench all day and weld basicly the same parts all day long and try to make it look as pretty as possible. This way my work is right there and the boss can see exactly what it is that I am doing, these type of jobs pay pretty much the exact same (roughly $20-$25 an hour) but with much much less stress.
I also notice that when I am working with my hands that it helps me to relax during the day. I'll still code on the side for extra work and as a hobby though.
Just my thoughts on the subject

i'm gonna be a fulltime lab rat...
put stuff in test tubes... shake it, heat it, spin it, freeze it.... little bit of responsiblity on animal care.... little bit of data analyzation with software... pretty much at my own hours, which sometimes is a lot and sometimes not (more than average).
have to talk to 1-3 people at a time just to keep yourself on tract with your experiments every day... but for the most part... no talking to ppl needed. have to give a progress report every once in a while....

I don’t see where logic states one is more desirable than the other...one might be easier for certain people; but then, that's subjective.
because of the way the world has become there are no virgin lands - property rights are had for everything and everywhere - no matter where and how you want to live, you would have to pay someone, whether it be the land where you reside, or the animals that you hunt.
