Today I toured a day program for adults with autism. It was great except two things. If I go to the program, life as I know it will completely change. I won’t be going to some of my special recreation programs. My music therapy, special needs swimming lessons and piano lessons will all have to change times.

The other problem is the saff:participant ratio is 1:5 and I barely function at 1:2.

The program is from 9:00am-3:00pm, like school, but way more fun.

Should I go for a trial day to see what it’s like?

What would happen if you didn't go to this program?

What's wrong with the previous program?

Absolutely! It sounds like a great opportunity.

I think you should give it a trial day.

I'd go for any experience that has no negative effec.

I would continue to be stressed by not having a regular daily schedule.

Nothing wrong with my special recreation programs. I enjoy them, but they don’t offer the regularity of my previous 9:00-3:00 day program (which I quit because of a serious and possibly illegal ethical issue).

I suppose I could go for a trial day. A trial day isn’t a commitment.

Now I understand, perfectly, why you want to go to this new program.

I hope the trial day works out for you.

Do you have to be committed to the whole day? Just that if it were me and it turned out to be too stressful etc., I'd want to feel able to abort the mission before it started feeling really horrible. Paradoxically, I seem to have more staying power if I don't feel under pressure to continue. And I've known things to start out bad but turn out good when I've stayed with it.

The thing sounds potentially useful but it looks like you'd have to give up a lot of music for it. That would be a tough call for me, as music is extremely good for me, but it depends on the quality of the music things of course.

I don't know if I'd have to stay the whole day. They really individualize it, and you can take as many breaks as you need.

The music stuff can be worked out.

Sooner or later, everything changes. I'd get some practice with adapting to it.

I've already gone through some major changes these past two years.

Most of my life has been unwelcome major changes, and the world chaos is only getting more intense. We do need some rest periods, but should not expect to settle in for long, while modern history is being writ large in the geologic record. As they say in Texas, "Keep a strain on 'er, partner."

That would make a big difference to me if I did something like that.

It seems like the world chaos is increasing exponentially rather than the linear way we have been brought to believe.
