At work the other day... some boredom set in and my coworkers were talking about playing softball. One guy plays shortstop, and I made the comment that I could easily play that position... no problem. I of course say this because it is so blatantly obvious that I could not do it... sarcastic humor about my lack of abilities is a good social skill to have I think.

Anyways they found a small ball... I don't know where this came from... and they were throwing it around. I tried too... and I thought it was quite interesting that I had absolutely no clue what I was supposed to do.

They were trying to tell me what to do... swing your arm in a circle... it's all in the wrist... look at where you want to throw the ball... every instruction I interpreted completely wrong. I am 25, it's not really embarrassing anymore... it's just a part of who I am... if I can use it for humor... that's better than playing on some crappy softball team anyways.

But I just find it strange that after all these years... I still have no clue of the proper wall to throw a ball.

Can anyone here actually do it? Were you forced to learn to throw play catch at a young age?

Those who can't do it... any amusing stories when you have tried to participate in sports?

I hadn't been aware that there was a proper way to throw a ball. I don't usually throw balls anyway.

I can't throw a ball. Even when playing softball in gym class in high school, I still did the "granny throw" type of thing-the underhand toss that makes the ball go very high up into the air, then generally doesn't make it to the person, lol. I do that with almost all balls, and if I try to throw with force, I often near-miss people's heads (this is when focusing on a target and they try to tell me how to do it).

My son is the same way, lol. He will wind up his arm and make himself look really nifty, then he throws the ball, spins in a circle and watches it drop to his feet, or make it halfway to the target. He is only 6, and finds it very amusing... of course, others that play with him don't find it so amusing, lol.

Yeah, that gets annoying. I hate it when people are really uptight about physical activities, throughout school you are just supposed to be able to do this stuff I guess. People will get angry if you can't do it well...

I love his response to it. They get very angry and uptight, and he will just respond "So what? I don't throw a ball as well as you do, it doesn't matter." Sometimes he will even go so far as to just say "you were the ones who wanted me to play to begin with, I didn't want to, so why are you surprised that I'm no good at it?"

I remember people being very competitive and knowing I was getting graded on how well I did these things at times. I also remember every time we played dodgeball, I would pretend I was running to catch a ball or sometimes just stand there as one came at me, just so I could get out quicker and read my books, lol.

I've been told I throw "like a girl". I think most girls throw better than me though.

When I throw people tell me to step and rotate my whole body and not just throw from my arm. When I do step and rotate my body I get more power but the ball goes somewhere unpredictable.
I have good arms and legs but they don't work together properly. Oh well. :(

I can throw it well if I throw it my way...

Doing it the way regular people do it, I will usually do not so well.

I've been told that. Now I just flat out say... "I throw like a girl."

Actually I over intellectualize it... I say "people have told me my throwing can be quite girl-like."

No one else in my family seems to have this problem though. Even one relative that has many of the same AS symptoms as me... he is quite good at sports and played football in high school I think.

I can throw a ball hard, but sometimes it is completely off target... I was a pitcher in baseball and would occasionally throw godawful pitches... but most of the time they were strikes...

Basically, I can throw a ball right, but sometimes they get away... Someone with AS was on my little league team and his throwing was absolutely atrocious, so you may be onto something.

My coordination isn't universally bad. My upper half and lower half just don't work together. When I bowl I can't get the steps right so I just walk up to the lane, stop, and roll the ball. I can do alright with sports that involve just the arms or upper body. For instance, I'm good at table tennis. I don't know if this is common in AS.

I can't throw to save my life, not just a ball, but a frisbee too. I am too embarrassed to play catch with someone, and wonder how I made it through school phys ed classes. Even if my other classes had been straight A's (which they weren't), my grade in phys ed would have ensured that I wouldn't be straight A's.

I can throw a ball with amazing accuracy - but I had to work very, very hard at it. I got laughed at as a kid, it was just beyond me. Then I met a guy who loved to just throw a ball, play catch, to work stress out. I was awful at it, but we practiced every day, since I was determined to catch on. Eventually I did, and it stuck. I still have to focus.

Nope, I can't throw a ball to save my life. Footballs especially. Eh, I've never been much of a sports person anyways, so I figure it doesn't really matter too much.

I think I can alright. Don't remember anyone saying I sucked or anything. I've never played organized sports or anything especially baseball beside being a HUGE fan. Haven't thrown a baseball in years though.

People use to make fun of the way I shot a basketball though. My leg use to kick out a little, not jump, and shot from the side kinda I guess. I haven't played in while but I fixed my shot so it looked good. Went in at the same frequency. If I actually practiced and everything, I could be pretty good. I couldn't do any of the crossovers, in between my legs, or anything like that but I could play defense, rebound, block shots, handle the ball when it was in front of me well, and I was quick.

I don't think I would have any problem if was playing like every day or something. Nobody ever taught me how do any of those things so how would I just naturally know?
