You said exactly my thoughts on the matter, better than I could have.
Mental illness or disabilities are NOT "cool."
What's positive and inspirational is when you are able to OVERCOME them and accomplish things DESPITE having them, but actually having them in and of itself is NOT cool.
BTW, my roommate isn't autistic as far as I know, but he is bipolar. He's largely functional, but it's definitely hindered his life significantly.
