The other day I was volunteering at this place, and It was the first time I did it, and one of the workers was on the phone, and I was like question, why do you smile when you are talking on the phone, their never going to see you? She laughed, everything I said serious, seems to make people laugh. Growing up people would love to hang with me, because they would think I was a comedian.

Like when I said oh one my arm is bigger then the other, she laughed, or when I was like helping this girl with a puzzle, I stopped and pointed to what I did and said look how much I accomplished, she laughed, it's like um thats suppose to be funny? I don't get people. It happens to me alll the time, like I'm always serious, but everybody think its cute or funny, does this happen to anybody else?

Yes I get this and used to get really upset thinking people were just laughing at me all the time but now I know more about AS I realise I perhaps use words in an unusual 'cute' way sometimes and it's how I say things not me personally they laugh at (that is what I now want to believe anyway!)
Example, recently I was told about a patentable project and asked to keep it quiet so to clarify I said 'so it's a secret' and the person laughed his socks off ... :? why????
I don't get people either

On the opposite - it happened to me quite a lot of times that when I was joking or at least I was making an attempt to joke, people were sure I was serious; rude and coarse. It's because I don't modulate my voice too much and its tone is rather monotonous.

people take my jokes seriously and my serious thoughts jokingly. If it makes someone else smile even if unintentionally, it's not too bad. It's when you unintentionally say something you think is a joke and suddenly you have a mob of angry people chasing you down with brooms when it's a major concern.

An adult friend of mine says that he knows I'm trying to be funny when I'm infact being serious. He says he "knows me."(And by that I mean he thinks he knows how I act.)

Haha thats happened to me too, where you try to make a joke, and nobody takes it as a joke, sometimes I try to be sarcastic, and everybody just looks at me like "was that an attempt to be sarcastic?" I'm like ughhh..

People sometimes do this to me. I am being serious but yet they laugh. My Dad has told me I am very cute. I always say to my boyfriend "I'm serious" and he says he knows and I point out to him "But you're laughing."

Yes and they think I am being serious when I am being funny, sometimes with upsetting consequences.

And they think I am sad when I'm happy and happy when I'm sad. Bizarre.

Yea I get that too, my boyfriend is always like why are you mad? when I'm actually happy. Sometimes when I get in deep thought, I get this facial expression that I'm either sad or angry. My facial expression changes all the time, I tell everybody I meet that, that don't judge me by my body movements or facial expression, because chances are its the opposite of what I am haha

I usually manage to convey serious/funny when appropriate but the times
I have a problem are when I'm under extreme stress but still endeavour
to stick to a 'funny' script.People must have the ability to read the tension
or panic on my face and thus, unable to reconcile 'funny' with my frozen
expression, are led to an an alternative 'how rude!' interpretation of whatever comment I've made.
For those of you who are always assumed to be joking, the answer must be
that you always come across as easy-going,relaxed and charming people,
which is understandable :)

I think maybe because people with AS have a unique way of thinking.

In general terms, humour for NT's is when somebody says something unexpected or unique of makes an intelligent comment/observation about something that the NT may not have thought of.

So to an NT you are saying something unique, so it is seen as humour.

Age1600, when you asked your colleague why they smiled when talking on the phone ... well that is a good point. So in part, your colleague was laughing at herself.

I find my sons' very refreshing. They offer me an alternate viewpoint. They make observations that I would not make. Some of what they say makes me laugh, because they're pointing out something that I missed. When they point it out I think, 'Wow, that was so obvious ... aren't I a big silly!'

I think NT's are so busy 'following the crowd' they don't stop and think about what they're doing / why they're doing it. Observations by people with AS makes them stop and actually think.

I don't know if I'm explaining this well. I'm an NT Mum with 3 sons with AS.

My 3 sons (with AS) often say unexpected things (unexpected to an NT like myself) and I laugh. They get upset because they didn't mean to be funny.

I apologise a lot!

I used to think my husband (who has AS) was mad a lot because his facial expression is so blank. I used to drive him crazy, asking him what was bothering him.

Now I will only ask him once if I think he's upset. If he says he's OK ... I leave him be.

SO annoying! It happens all the time. I guess our jokes are over most ppl's heads. Here's one I thought was hilarious...the response? The sound of crickets..

Background info: I was delivering a meal to the Juvenile Justice Center after a horrendous storm, and at night. As I pulled up, the darkend windows lit up. It was the only building within miles with power.

Joke: I radioed into base and said, "The JJC has power. Finally, the hotwiring came in handy!"

....and then, silence. One person told me how dumb I was for telling a joke that made no sense. *Sigh*

Oh, yes. I get this all the time. I say something that's intended to be a serious comment, and everybody falls about laughing, and I stand there wondering why they can't see, from my face, how much it irritates me...but apparently they can't, because nobody's ever said sorry.

I thought it was funny too! I'm trying really, really hard not to start referring to NT's as "little brains".
They think significantly faster than me, but far simpler.
